Why would you fiberglass over that? That is a full console not a frame. What arer you trying to do? I take the holes in the console are for glove box/storage areas?

MDF is very pourous and dificult to finish similar to fiberglass.

The center console I'm doing will turn out great.  The pic is just the ruff assembly... not the finished product.

Anyone know if I can just put resin directly on the mdf?

Are you trying to paint it? Yes if you are trying to paint it then just put a couple of layers of resin on wood, sand, fill, sand, sand some more, then paint.

that looks great man.  you can just paint the resin onto the mdf.  be careful with drips, cuz you'll be spending time sanding that thing smooth!

The picture is of a CC that is just a test.  I'm redoing it for the final product.

My idea is to have the sides wrapped in black tweed and the center/top of the center console to be a glassed piece that is going to be painted.  I'm trying to figure out how to get the curves for the middle front piece down in such a way that it'll look good.(towards the front of the cc that you see)  The top flat piece will just be a piece of mdf that I'll glass over but the curve where the flat piece will end and on to the slots for the source unit and dvd player are proving to be a problem.

What's not pictured is a second part of the center console that goes in front of what you see that will house a 10" monitor and will flow from just under where you see the gauge holes to the front of the center console that you do see.

Looks good, do you have more pics?  I do not have any suggestions to offer, but will be watching your progress as I have one I need to do for a 96 F250.

More pics please.

No more pics yet... It has only progressed via the insides of the cc so there is not much to see... today I'm redoing the final rear part of the console.

Does anyone know how much thickness to compensate for a layer of glass on the mdf?

Looks great man, if i can make one suggestion it would be to round over the edges of the piece with a round over bit oin a router, the wrapping will sit and look better that way. Id use a polar fleece to wrap a piece like that, as it will soak up resin better than grill cloth and come out a lot stronger.  Good Job man

I know you can't see it but the edges are round over with a router bit.

There are two kinds of fleece that glassers use the most.  One is thicker than the other.  I have a shat load of the thinner kind.  I'm hoping that this will be good enough.  Is polar fleece the thicker kind?

Thanks,

BTW,

The cross pieces you see are screwed in temporarily just to hold the two side pieces in place so that I can take measurements.

cool man, just hard to tell in the pic!

Mostly the materials i use from thinnest to thickest are - Grill Cloth, Polar Fleece and Plush Felt.

The Polar fleece is probably what you have, its kind of like the stuff you get on fleecy coats, you will need to soak it inside and out though, and use resin expander(Fumed Silica) with the resin on the inside as it will save you on resin.

Might be a good idea to keep the Cross sections in for strength to, you wont see them once its wrapped.

Keep the pics rollin in man!

I'll post a pic of the fleece I have.

The console will be braced significantely inside due to the storage compartments.  When I finish the rear section of the console I'll post some more pics so you can see everything I'm talking about.  If you look at the picture I did post, the sides of the rear console that you see are going to be wrapped in either black vinly (sp) or blk tweed.  So with the sides done that way I'm going create a lid out of 1/2" mdf for the flat portion of the console and glass directly over that.  I still have to figure out what to do about the curved portions.

The part of the console that you don't see if from the radio slots on that will be fab'ed out of mdf and fiberglass and will flow from the dash to the center console and house a 10" monitor.

I'll try to get the rear section almost done tonight.

Keep the suggestions and info coming.

Thanks,

TCalYen

I noticed in the pic, you are missing your air bag.  Are you putting something in there?  I put the Pioneer touch screen monitor in mine and hooked it up to the avic-80 navigation unit.  it was a PAIN IN THE ASS to get the cable through and be able to do U-turns!  What I did was cut the data cable posted_image  and I soldered all 30 wires to a 26 gauge 20-wire computer cable.  But anyways, thats another topic!!  Although I still had to make a glass enclosure so it would look nice!

Nah,

I just am painting the steering column and airbag cover.  I need my airbag.  One saved my life once.  Seriously did...

Air bags and seat belts rule, I would not be here todday if it was not for them. That is what happens when a drunk bitch drives home on her 21st birthday and does not which side of the road to be on. But on the topic now, looks cool good job.

Well I've finally started up again on the console... I had to fix the ac and do some other things which held me up a bit.

I've just finised up the wiring for two of the switch panels and will be sectioning out the main body into two pieces soon.

The hardest part is going to be getting the console to house a 10" lcd and flow from the dash into the console.  Here are some pics... I'll post more later.

Oh and I got a new wheel btw...

the shotgun with shells on stock is the most amusing

i assume thats teh 'if this doesn't work...' means of solution?

now thats a fog machine in there no? strikes me as a bit odd. horrible to have that of all things go off while drivin. heh.

the bulk of the center box makes more sense now tho, for sure.

Well I'm glad the shotgun amused you... and no I don't think that I'll be shooting any center consoles in the near future.

The fog machine won't be going off any time I don't want it to... and if for some reason it does... it'll dump the fog underneath the vehicle just as it's supposed to do.

As for the bulk of the console... if I didn't have the fog machine in there, I probably would have kept it the same size and just enlarged the two storage compartments that will be within the console.  There is also going to be either a 7" HR LCD or a motorized 7" LCD in the rear triangulated section of the console which adds to the bult as well.
