I have recently been working on the trunk of a '91 caprice (please no comments about the car, only the install). It is the first time I have done this type of install but I think it is going well. The box will house 2 Infinity Reference 12's and he wanted to use his Punch 500 amp. I still have some smoothing to do and I have to make sure all the panels fit just right. It is going to be some combination of paint and vinyl to match the interior but I am not sure as to what it will be.

Looks great man, really like what you have done there, might be an idea to put dynamat or something of the kind down under the install but its definately taking shape, get some filler on now! keep us updated with progress!

I am going to agree with Dyson on that one, put something down, otherwise your losing valiable pressure and responce. As far as his setup goes, I would have run some more high end stuff if I was going to go to that extent in my trunk. I hope you are making some nice money tho bro! Does look great! What will be mounted under the trunk latch where it comes out? Is anything else going to show? I.e. Caps, batts, amps, DB's, ect..?

The customer is mostly concerned with how it looks and not really how it sounds. I agree I would have used different stuff as well, but that is what he wanted. That spot at the trunk latch has a space where a blue neon light goes. The box is going to be white so it will shine out onto the box. If I was doing this for myself I would have done some things differently, but his money is good. I think I have about 40 hours to this point. As I said this was the first time I have done this type of install so I made a few mistakes initially that caused a little more work. I hope to have it ready to cover this weekend so expect an update then.

Man cuz, your work is always off the meat rack.  I thought you fell off the map.  I have a bubble that I will be working on this summer after I finish my Durango.  You just gave me some sick ideas for my bitch.  I know you asked not to say anything about the car, but I have to say thank you for showing the bubble some love.  In the south that type of car is a diamond to the tru players.  For those who don’t know a diamond starts with a piece of coal!  I have one question for you pimp.   What was your process for make this sides of the box?  I’m talking about the third picture.   It looks like you used chop mat and resin.   Do you have any more pic’s?

I only said not to mention the car because last time it got a little ugly.  I'm from Texas and these things are everywhere. For the sides of the box I did it just like the rest. Made the frame and stretched fabric. Then I used chopped mat until it was strong enough to come out.

That looks awesome M&m. How are you going to attach the enclosure to the car frame so it doesn't move around? Or is it gonna fit tight so it won't move?

Hey how many box's have you done? it looks awsome man, mad props.... just wondering... how come you only used one ring for the subs? i though you were suppose to use 2 together? one thick one (bottom) to screw sub into then second one (top) to go around the sub woofer itself? or is that not neccessary (sp?)

Posted By: M&mfabrications
Date Posted: April 06, 2005 at 10:36 PM
I have done about 6 boxes and some other projects. You only have to use two rings if you intend to flush mount the sub woofer. I had initially planned for the actual box to be vinyled so I was going to surface mount the woofer to make the vinyl work easier. When building a box that I plan on painting I flush mount them using two rings like you described.

I don't have any new pictures yet, but I have to have it finished for him to pick it up on the 17th. He decided he wanted me to do the trunk lid as well so I needed more time. When it is finished I will have pictures.

Just a small update before the weekend. All I have left to do is finish the trunk lid and get a few more pieces wrapped in vinyl. I expect to have everything done and working Saturday evening and I will post finished pictures then.

Done! Well almost. I got everything finished except for the sign that goes on the trunk lid. It is just a cut out logo with backlighting to show it at night. I planned to cover it in vinyl and cut out for the logo but it was looking awful. So I am just going to paint it instead. However, everything else went pretty well. This was my first time dealing with vinyl on anything but a flat surface so it's not perfect, but I was pleased over all and so was the customer. And it even sounds pretty good.

I charged $500 for the trunk and $120 for the trunk lid. This was the first time I had done this type of install and this much vinyl work so I knew that there would be some places that were not as good as I would have liked them to be. So I factored that into the price.

is that $500 for the pocket or including materials?

thanks.

Hey M&mfabrications

I just read through the thread here. The pics look good. It's funny you sound a lot like me. I do a lot of fiberglass and paint work. I never charge enough, and I never get my car done. I just wondered if you have done something hot for your car, or if you really are like me riding around with a blow speaker still because you just don't have time to do your owe stuff. Actually right now I'm doing other cars trying to save up the money for mine it will be done someday.

Actually I got a lot of practice by doing stuff for my own car first. Heres what I have in my truck.

Darn right man that looks real good. I'm going to post some pics of my most recent project real soon. I only get to work on it about 2 days a week. So I want to get more done before I put up anything. After that I think I'll finnally be able to work on my car. I've been collecting equipment for it. I'll be using 3 10" audiobahn alums. 2 3-way compontent sets from audiobahn, and 2 alphasonic amps. I'm still deciding on a head unit, and I also have 2 panasonic tv's. I have some pics online from older projects too. Let me know what you think.

hey, i saw the gaps u left for the trunk lid to come down, i had a brain fart, and out of it, i though of this...why not take 2 peice's of black rubber, flexible, and put them but end against each other, so it covers the gaps, but when the lid comes down, they let it close still. looks something like this...

thats a good idea...U can also use black brush bristles, i read about it before but i dont know how it would work...maybe u can buy strips of the stuff or something..mabe someone else knows what i'm talking about, but its supposed to give a really clean look. Its like the bristles that cover the gap in the floor shifter on some vehicles.

How do the volfenhag subs sound I have really been debating on trying them out I have a pair of Infinity kappa 12s (green ones) and they sound great but i love the look of the volfenhag subs.

You can use the inexpensive wooden handled snow brushes to cover the gap on each side. I've seen this done and that way you have something solid to mount on.

Your work is envyable, keep it up!!!

Josh12-
I had 2 of the Volfenhag 15's in my car about 2 years ago. I wanted to hear how 15's would sound in my 91 Corolla so I bought them because they were really cheap. They aren't bad at all for the money, granted they aren't the best subs in the world but they looked good and I thought they sounded pretty good as well.

The Volfenhags sound okay but I probably wouldn't get rid of some Kappas for them. In fact I took out the Volfenhag and replaced them with an Infinity Kappa Perfect.

i'd stay away from the volfs.

i sold a kid a pair, (ordered only by request!!) and he put the volf amp that was matched to them, and they punctured holes in the cones with the terminals on the back!!! proper box, and everything, and they didn't really sound good in the first place..
