I was wondering if mixing Bondo, Resin and acetone will give me a nice smooth finish on my FG inclosure. I've tried glazing putty but I just cant get rid of all the pits. If anybody could help me out that would be great. thanx

I just kept sandinging and filling with bondo until they are all gone.  its time consuming but it works.

DON'T use bondo, it is 40 year old crap. Rage Gold and metal glaze work very well to fill and remove pin holes in prep for painting.

hatch,

Yeah I saw on here where some guy did a box for a beamer and used the mixture that you were talking about. He said that he was able to "paint" the mixture on with a brush. If I can find the post I will post a link. However he didn't specify the mixture ratios or which hardner he mixed in (bondo hardner or resin hardner). Any way it looked like a good experiment.

Thanx lincolnman!   I think I might try that. I saw the post and it looked smooth. It would be killer if I could put it on with a paint gun. I need it smooth cuz Im painting the enclosure.

Bondo is basically rein mixed with talcum power. Also Bondo hardener is basically the same hardener used in resin, with some talcum power. So to thin out bondo just add resin to your desired thinness and apply w/ a brush. I’m not sure about adding the acetone. I just use the resin.

Why add resin? I can almost see thining the Bondo if you can't get Rage, but I don't understand the resin. Glazing putty is not for smoothing out an enclosure, just to fill tiny pinholes. I also doubt your gonna find anything that will spray on. You need Rageposted_image

Hey, I've been checking out the posts on the bondo/resin/hardener idea and decided to give it a try. I mixed 1 part Rage gold to 1 part polyester resin. Mixed it up to the consistency of mustard, then when its completely mixed together I added a small amount of the creme hardener that came with the Rage. Mixed well and applied with a paint brush. I layed the door panel out flat on my bench and it went on super smooth and easy, I was also able to get into the tight spots and contours well! And it self levelled!!! I let it set for 3 hrs and went back to check on it. It is completely hardened and looks smooth as glass, very little sanding will be needed.

I'll post some pics tomorrow when I get my camera out.posted_image

personally I like to get the surface smooth and either use Polyester primer filler or for a super expensive paint job use House of Kolors KP21A/B to get it smooth as glass. Both of these products are filling/high build primers to achieve final bild and smoothness.

1hot944 - were you able to get the pix?  I'm really interested in this (I'll be building new door panels and kick panels very soon).

us_test It worked out really well, very little sanding needed. If your door panels or kicks are going to have any tight spots or crevaces you might want to try it!

I like Rage Gold but I love Dolphin Glaze. Its a spray body filler that self levels and doesn't require alot of finishing work. But for those few pin holes just get some 3m Finishing Putty and skim over it.

1hot944 - I saw your webpage everything looks good.   I'll give this a shot this weekend.  I just did some sound deadening on the door panels (I'll keep the stock on for a bit while I get new ones) using WalMart undercoating spray $2.68 per can (I have a detailed post about this).  Very recommended product.
