Hey guys,
Im sure this has been covered I did a quick search and wasnt sure. What is the best glue to use to glue the fleece to your fiberglass mold? Also what is best to glue wooden dowel rods to the fiberglass mold?
thanks, realitycheck

I used spray glue for fleece, but don't FG over it.  Someone else mentioned using silicon caulk.  Another used a rabbet joint at the edge & staples.  For the dowels, I used FG resin with thickening agent (cabosil-aerosil), basically some inert thickener.  Make it as thick as possible but still somewhat stir-able.  Worked very well.

I've only done this twice, so obviously not a pro!

I have always seen people saying that they use a glue gun for the dowels, although I would really try and cement it in with a small peice of FG after to make sure that it isn't going anywhere since the Hot glue gun doesn't create that strong of a bond!

Why can't you FG over fleece that has been Spray glued? I planned on doing it this week when sealing the fleece & resin front mold to the existing back mold....was that description good enough?

Because the resin will melt the spray glue and your fleece will come undone before it hardens. Then you get too yank it off and start all over again. That would'nt be too much fun.

I have always read that everybody used the hot glue gun but I just wasnt sure if that was the best method. So I figured i'd ask everybody.

Awesome, yeah I used the staple gun last time on my sub-box. I had the mdf so I could just staple to the back, but this time everything is fiberglass so I cant do that. So I guess i'll have to break out the hot glue gun. I just feel like this will take a really long time to stretch the fleece and then wait for the hot glue to dry so that it wont move.

hmmm, that's weird.

I have used the spray glue and it worked for me? I even had to pull a piece of lycra off and pull it tighter because of wrinkles and then glue it again..........maybe it's because I use Lycra to stretch over the mold.

hot glue works great on the fleece.. and if ur fiberglassing everything man why don't u just staple the fleece since u will be covering it up whats a couple of staples going to hurt??? wood glue or resin works best for the dowels.. i have used hot glue before but its not as strong of a bond as u would like to have since u will be wrapping fleece around it..

Well the only thing is I just dont think that staples will go into fiberglass well. Maybe they will I just dont want it cracking cause I shot staples into it. I ended up using hot glue on the dowels it seems pretty strong, I used a ton so it should stay long enough for me to stretch it and let the resin harden. I sure hope it does anyway. Im getting ready to stretch the fleece hopefully tonight. I just have to get my leds into place and then I should be ready!

Staples don't penetrate into fiberglass at all ( unless the glass is only 1 or 2 layers thick ). Use the dowel method.

why would u staple fiberglass anyways,  if that was in reply to ragoal12's reply, i think he was talking about stapeling the fleece to  MDF to keep the fleece in place before it gets fiberglassed (I missed the part that he was attaching fleece to FG, so he might have too).  hot glue (or possibly spray glue if it works) to hold the fleece to anything other than wood.  How quick does the spray glue dry though?  I like the hot glue cause u dont have to hold it in place for too long.

You guys were right. I tried to use duct tape that didnt work so I just used the hot glue gun. Yeah you guys were right it doesnt take long at all to get it too dry. Now I just have to cut the excess off and rip that hot glue off as well. Your correct placid im gluing the fleece to a fiberglass mold so thats why I didnt want to staple it. thanks for the help again guys.

i am in the same boat.  I built the base of my center console out of fiberglass and now i ahve to stretch  grill cloth over it and get it tight,  i am still trying to find a quick way to secure the cloth (quick like a staple gun)  my experience with hot glue is still about 30-40 seconds of sitting there not moving waiting for it to harden enough to go to the next section.  Someone said to 'use the dowel method, but didnt really explain 'the dowel method' so now im going to do a search on 'the dowel method'

nothing amazing yet, but its coming

Yeah I dont know what they were talking about the dowel method. I just took the glue gun and made a zig zag pattern back and forth and pushed the fleece down with my hands.  Held for about 10 seconds maybe. It was good to go, just dont put down too much glue and it wont take so long to dry.
