I need some ideas on what materials to use to make a spare tire/trunk area cover for my hatchback mustang.

I have the battery in the middle of the spare well (in a battery box with compound curves on the corners).  I asked a while back and someone suggested just stretching some fleece and hot gluing it to the battery box and the surrounding sides of the trunk area. However, I'd like something a tad bit stronger and I have been thinking of using foam.

How expensive would the foam material be, and is Home Depot the best place to get it? It seems like a good choice because I can cut and shape it easy, and it is lighter than say, MDF. I am lousy at working with wood so I would like to stick with primarily glass/foam.

I don't know what your really trying to do but, I suggest using cardboard or like 1/4" wood. Foam seems like it would be kinda hard to shape plus it won't hold it's own shape too well.

I find that Foam sucks to work with. If it's not too big of an area you can probably use the foam blocks found in the linen/arts and crafts section at wal-mart (that's what I use) but, with any foam you have to make sure you cover it with like three layers of tape and two to three layers of aluminum foil or else your mold will be deformed...that's why I hate working with it. Anyway, Wally world sells it for like 5 to 6 bucks for a pretty big block. If you want something stronger go with MDF like 5150azn said or just add some glass to the fleece afterwards. If you don't want to bother with the glass, just fleece it, cover it with the "miracle mixture" and sand. That's what I did with my center console and it came our VERY sturdy.

Check out alpine's show cars. They use an MDF shaped skeleton to make the underside and then glass over it. They did this on all three of there cars so far and show step by step in detail how it was done. Check this out for some inspiration, I know it helped me I hope it can help you. Good luck.
