Hi,

I am unbelievably new to making custom boxes. Since I have no experience with fiberglass whatsoever, would it be a better idea to just build a box out of wood and use copious amounts of bondo to shape around it, or would it actually be worth it to learn to fiberglass stuff?

I'm not worried about finish because I want to put carpet over it anyways; I just want the shape.

dont use loads of bondo on anything.   if u want to get some nice shape to the box then u should learn to do fiberglassing, if u dont mind having a boxy box then just use MDF.  U can still add stuff to the MDF box like logos or other raised lettering.

It is well worth the time learning to use glass. Read all you can about it on this sight and other places as well. If you still have questions this is the place to ask. It is not that hard as long as you keep it simple so please don't be scared to try your hand at it.

Yeah and you can even get you just a tiny project start it and learn the basics and then go on to building you a big speaker box. Its not hard to fiberglass it just takes practice.  Seriously if you have any questions dont be afraid to ask were glad to help.

Allright, thanks guys.

I don't think I'm going to do it for a few months, but I just doing some preliminary research on it. What I wanted to do was put an enclosure in the side of my trunk towards the back and have it look like it is actually part of my trunk.

Here's another quick question: Where can I get materials to start fiberglassing from? Can I pick it up at like Home Depot or something, or do I have to go to a specialty store?

While I'm here, I guess I'll ask another question. posted_image

I've read around trying to find out the best way to make a mold or frame or something to fiberglass over. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried chicken wire. It seems to me like it would be a quick, easy way to build exactly the shape you wanted.

yeah some people like to use chicken wire to shape it but most people just use fleece

Sorry.......

In my last post i didnt many myself clear most people use mdf to make a sub ring and stretch fleece over it to make a sloped shape.........

Another way to shape something for fiberglass is to buy some foam block from wal-mart or the like and just carve it away till you have your desired shape.......

How do you get the foam out once you start to fiberglass?

If you need to you could pull it out if you get the chance or if it is in the way. If it is not in the way or you can't get to it leave it in there.

you can also poor gasoline or another type of solvent and it will eat the foam away. but don't let "green peace" catch you doin it, I hear they hang people for destroying the ozone!! haha

Basic things needed is some wood or chicken wire (depending on how you plan to make your inclosure or whatever.) going to need some streachy fleece, some paint brushes and of course some resign and some fiberglass mat. you also need a few other misc things depending on what your making, like a staple gun or air nailer, hot glue, and some tinfoil and some masking tape (if making molds) that should be pretty much it.

hmmm.... was that the right wire?

since this topic is already open l'll ask my questions also rather than starting another one. I am also totaly new to FG'ing and making custom enclosures. I am somewhat good with hands on projects and want to start learning,  i was thinking of making an enclosure in my trunk  to put my two 15's in. i also wanted to put in my 2 amps and 2  6x9's in with a nice rounded smooth shape. I will sketch it out and upload it so u can get an idea.  This is definatly a big task for someone with no experience but im going to try it anywayz. can anyone give me a basic step by step on how to do this, just the basic steps on making a fiberglass molded enclosure, i will modify it to fit my application, -Dj
