When glassing a dash how many layers should I do?  I am not going to add anything to the dash I just want it to look good and paint it.  I know to sand it first and drill some tiny holes in it to allow bonding but, how many layers should I go and should I use like 3/4 mat?

Thanks

why not just paint on top of the dash without using any glass if you dont want to modify it? what kind of car is it?

Just rough it up and put resin on it and sand it to make it smooth if that's what you want, then go ahead and paint it. You don't need fiberglass unless there is structure involved.

I wouldnt even put resin on it. I would just sand down the plastic to like an 80 grit.  Then primer sand your primer up to about 320, lay another coat of primer, then paint that bad boy.

Unless the dash was vinyl. If vinyl fiberglass isn't going to adhere as well. I just peeled all the vinly off and glassed the gaps and bondo'd it. But plastic can definitely be roughed up and resined.

For vinyl I rough it and spray on flex primer and sand smooth. Be sure you don't sand to much on the vinyl and damage the crap out of it.

clean the vinyl with a wax and grease remover first

rough the vinyl with like 220 320 i dunno something like that

clean again

shoot with bulldog 2-3 light coats

shoot a couple of layers of a 2k (prefferably high build) primer (DO NOT FORGET TO USE FLEX ADDITIVE)

spray a guide coat (black primer / or whatever)

use a soft sanding sponge w/ 600 grit and water sand smooth no guide coat left

base coat ( DO NOT USE A BASECOAT THAT USES A "HARDENER") until primer is fully covered probably 2-3 coats depending on color and color of primer

clear coat (DO NOT FORGET TO USE FLEX ADDITIVE)
