Im really hoping you guys can give me some good advice on this part of my car. In my 2000 monte carlo i want to ditch the old headliner i have. My entire car is black with black leather, but my headliner is this light tanish-grey color! Just recks the theme right?! lol, well anyways i want to glass and paint it high gloss black (just like the outside of my car) Has anyone tackled this project in the same vehichle, or at least a similar two door? How on earth do i get the headliner out of the vehichle for prep and glass? and furthermore, how do i get it back in without chipping? Any idea how much this will cost, or furthermore a recomendation on products? This is my first glass project so i think im going to order a headliner off line to practice on.....who knows, maybey ill get lucky and i can just pop it in first try! Well i need as much help as i can get so lay it on me! Thanx!

Well, if you glass it out of the car can you get it back in? It won't bend after glassing, so that would be the first thing to check.

Well i am glassing the top dash as well, so i very well may have the windshield removeed, do you think i should just try and do the entire project in one shot? Im looking at my windshield now and the pillars seem to move inwar i dont know how much easier it would be to get the liner out.

2 things...
one- you wont be able to get that headliner in after you glass it. Not in one piece anyhoe. so you could get creative and cut it into thirds after you glass it, give it a creative cut (wavy, or zig zag maybe) paint it and reinstall it with some inserts where the cuts are. Like plexi with led lighting behind, or cut abs that fits the cuts and leave a 16th of an inch to wrap some suede or vinyl around it. Just an idea. It really wouldnt be that hard to do. I would definitly recomend some hush mat on the roof if you do this as your system will make your new hardened headliner have a horrible slapping and rattling sound. Possibly bad enough to ruin your new paint work your doing...
two- you dont have to take your headliner out to glass your dash. Just take the dash out! LOL. Its hard in some vehicles, but not so bad in most. If this is your first time doing this just take your time. get baggies and mark them with where the bolts and screw came from exactly and you will be fine. I need to upload some pics, but I am currently working on glassing the rear deck of a 94 deville to hole two sets of components. Your only limited to your imagination with glassing man. Best of luck.

Lathan, my friend glassed his grand prix's headliner in th car (sanded it and painted as well......SUPOSEDLY it looks really good, ive yet to see the final product. Do you think this is feasible, or would i be better off just cutting mine like you had originially suggested and working it outside the car?

can I ask why you are planning on glassing it? Why not just buy about two to three feet of black leather and re-upholster it yourself? It's not hard really, just buy spray adhesive and leather. It would match your interior alot better, you'd be able to get it in there that much easier, and better yet it won't take as long as glassing it would. If you're interested let me know and I can give you the links.

Nice auex...posted_image

that comment just reminded me of in the movies when an ADHD child eats a crayon then interrupts someones conversation to tell them how much he enjoys the color of grass.

I am not making fun of anybody out there, believe me, but I think auex deserves a gold posted_imagefor today.

LOL

But seriously, suede is what I am redoing my xterra in and it forms very easy...maybe look into that.

yea, doing it in the car is totally pheasable man. I wouldn't care to do it because upside down work sucks as is especially with sanding. I have really enjoyed the money Ive made doing the suede recovers also. There fast and easy. The main reasons I suggested the cutting of the headliner is just to be different and offer some flexibility as well as be prepared for the noise issues you might encounter. make sure and post pics and I look forward to seeing what you decide. best of luck.
