I haven't been here for a while cause I have been busy with work but I finally got enough time to start a new project. This is the fourth different setup I have had in this truck so far. I just started saturday so not much except for frame work at this point. The box will be ported and house three 15's that are sunk down into the larger rings seen in the pictures. I didn't want to redo everything for my airbag gauges and switches so I am tying this box in with the existing console. The first couple of pics show the rings before they were set in place. I was just getting  a feel for how they would go.

My buddy got his truck broken into and his head unit and amps were stolen so I got three of his four punch stage 1 15's. I normally wouldn't use 15's, especially these,  just because the space they take up but these were practically free so I thought I would give them a try. He had them in a big ported box and they sounded decent.

I had that same bass konb for my RF amp. what I did with mine was I took the internals out, drilled a 1/4" hole in a pop-out panel in the dash, then installed it there. very discreet and always within reach

Just curious as to how you got the appropriate volume measurements and port length calculations?  I wouldn't know where to start.

So far I just used rough measurements to get the volume in the ballpark. I am quite sure that I will have more than I need once I get finished so I will add some wood to the inside to get the volume back to where I want it. As for actually measuring the exact volume I am not sure yet as to what I will do. I may use packing peanuts or even fill it with water once its sealed good. I used WinISD to determine the port length and size.

What i do is wrap in it fleece once you get your design, ,then do the packing peanuts thing.....then build your port......re measure...then fiberglass.

Thats probably what I will do. I am definitely waiting until I know the volume before I add the ports.

how many ports are you using? running them right next to the front seats (between the door and seat) and moulding them so they look factory would look sweet

8thorder thats a good idea but I'm not going to do anything fancy with the ports. I am going to have two and about the only place I can easily put them is behind each side speaker pointing up towards the top. I got it skinned today and am starting to glass it now so I snapped a couple of pictures.

what kinda fabric is that you used??

Posted By: M&mfabrications

I don't know what kind of fabric it is. I just went to the fabric shop and found something cheap that would stretch in both directions and that was thick enough to hold the resin well. I started smoothing it out over the weekend and hope to have it ready for paint over the Christmas Holiday.

the subs are gonna be mounted on the lower recessed rings not the top ring so that whole area "going down into the cone" is gonna be visible.

I'm wondering why he did it that way.  Anyone care to calculate what frequency is going to be amplified by that HORN!

Looks excellent man.  I'm wondering though, why did you use so much bondo?  I used a ton on my FG enclosure, but that was only because it was a master to be copied.  Was it really that un-smooth?

ok now it makes sense.. at first when i looked at it i was wondering about it... not sure if i like the horn design.. but none the less its clean and done right so i appreciate it and give lots of credit to the project very nice man.. hit that with some nice dupont paint and load in the audio gear!!!!

The recessed areas ended up being a little more prominent than I had intended but I thought it still gave it a good look that I haven't really seen before so I like it.  And to answer Poorman no it wasn't that unsmooth at all and when I am done most of that Rage Gold will be dust on the floor. I just got a little excited with the filler. Right now the plan for paint is black with realistic style blue flames.

Posted By: M&mfabrications

I'm not real sure how many I would guess about 7 on the top and maybe 5 on the more curved areas. I just kept adding until it passed the thumb test.

when u push on the "sections"of fiberglass with ur thumb.if u u have good rigidity than u have the right amount of layers, but if it is still flexable then its too thin.maybe a little more elaboration from someone would help, lol,im not good at describing things.

Posted By: jlord16
Date Posted: December 24, 2005 at 8:37 PM
You use your thumb to apply pressure to sections of fibreglass, if it flexes then its going to flex if air was pounding against it from a sub.  It it dosnt flex it usually all good.  You should be able to stand on ur fibreglass boxes aswell.  My last sub box could hold about 80Kg or aboout 160lb of weight (me standing on it) without even flexing so i knew it was going to be heaps strong

A couple of new pictures, not much to see. I still have to finish smoothing the inside part of the cones. That area got kind of wavy since I had to glass it from the outside. I am going to paint it black so I have to get it really straight.

Hey man it might be kinda sweet lookin if you just cleared it like that. It would give it a camo look. Just a suggestion. That is one bad *** box. It might be kinda cool to airbrush some ghost flames on the cones youve fabbed. Thats one sick box.

I'm giving you the credit for a reason not gust cause want to. that was a brilliant way to design a box. that extra dip that you have formed around the subs cone will reinforce the sturdiness around the area that is going to be flexing the most. another thing is that if you do it that way you can put some kind of fabric over that dip that goes down to the sub. and make it look like there isn't even a sub there and the only way to now is when it is playing and the fabric will move in and out in unison with the beat. if you do do this you can get some really cool fabric out there in cool colors to. make sure it lets air through it but still covers the area well, so you cant see the subs. but if you are looking to do something else go right ahead that design gave me that idea so i though i would share it. that design is brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!

Box looks alright. The upper rings should have been hit with a roundover bit ,inside and out.Would have given it a lot better look.I think you are going to have some cancellation issues with youre subs firing in totally different directions. And you better add about 10 more layers of matt to that thing,or you will watch it dance.
its huge ,but all in all it looks good.Keep the pix comin.Im doing somthing simalr in a 88 Z24 with 6,15s

Shudnt the subs firing in different directions reduce cancellation as opposed to subs firing when they face eachother

Jlord I would tend to agree with you that because the subs are all pointed in completely different directions that cancellation will not be a concern and even if there is any I doubt it would be of a significant level to be noticeable.

Posted By: dstang24
Date Posted: February 20, 2006 at 12:17 AM

They are not facing eachother <180 degrees>, therefore there is no chance of cancellation.  On top of that, the wavelength of sub-bass frequencies is very long (usally over 15-25 ft).  This means that the two speakers facing eachother must be about half the distance apart compared to the wavelength at the Fs of the speakers to cancel out, if I'm thinking through this properly.  Therefore the speakers would have to be sepparated by 7-15ft at least.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

It's all about nodes and ant-nodes in the audio signal...

There is 7ft^3 of air space. Well I took such a long break from working on this box that I think I have decided not to use it and to instead go with three 12's. I have an Infinity Kappa Perfect 12VQ now and I think I am going to get two more and do a much simpler box instead. If I change my mind and decide to finish this box I will post some photos.
