Hey everyone I am still kind of new to FG and I have a 66 442 that I have been working on for some years now and I want to know what you guys think I should do with this dash. I want to just fiberglass the whole thing in. But I have never done such a thing before so I wanted all of your guys opinions, advice, and ideas.
Thanks,

Heres some pics of what i have to work with

You have your work cut out for you. What I would do in your situation is get in the car..and draw out exactly what you want the dash to look like and where you want all of the dash componets to sit. If you want your instrument cluster centered in the dash draw it out. I wouldn't advice just going in there and start laying mat.

You definatly got some work cut out for you....the most important thing is the planning and framming....Make sure you have a detailed drawing of where you want everything and then draw out your frame...then start making that frame

Check out alpines site and look at the demo cars, under support.  They have tons of pics from step 1.  I'd check out car interiors to see what I liked from different other interior and put what ever combo you want together.  Thats cool that you have from scratch to work with.  Good luck, but plan WELL.  If you don't you'll be starting over a bunch.  The drawing is a good idea.

well personally i would take the original dash and modify that if you have it.. it would save u alot of time and work of building a frame.. the big FG guy in town has redone a couple dashes in camaros and chevelles and i think they look great...

but if your bound and determined to make everything from scratch.. i would suggest putting in the steering column and biuld around that since that is the most crucial component on the dash for the driver..

You may have to use some bondo on your dash if you are looking for a smooth glassy finish....The finish product will not be as smooth if you dont use some type of filler.

i wouldn't be afraid to use bondo... how else will you get the smooth look????

I have planned on doing the same thing to my '72 Chevelle. I think that a mojority of the sub-structure/ frame will be MDF. Its hard to visualize exactaly what I want to do. Maybe something close to the original dash with new gauges, or something totaly radical. Good luck with your project!!! Keep us updated with pics.

well i would start by getting all the component that your going to have in your dash i.e. your gauges(speedo, tach, etc), radio, monitor or what ever.. and lay those out where you want them and then you can use mdf to make the skeleton of the dash and when you wrap it with fleece you can see the shapes you will be getting.. its kind of a project that you might build part of it and then cut it out cause it don't look right... but personally i would  go with something similiar to those pics i posted... they make lack the curves of new cars but you don't have a new car.. the updated instruments along with the smooth FG look do really well to compliment the interior of older muscle cars and hot rods...

I would be careful about the height of the gauge cluster. I don't have the seats in my car, and it has a manual transmission. So it's going to be hard to find the perfect mix between seat height, shifter height, and dash height. After the seats are mounted then I'll be able to figure out the right height for the dash ect..

What kind of look/feel are you going with the whole car in general? What gauges are you going to go with? You going to have A/C? Do you want a radical or simple design...or somewhere in between?

I ran across the "Red Rocker" project C-10 and seen that they rebuilt the dash. I would follow what ragoal12 said and build a skeleton out of MDF, stretch the fleece, apply resin and a couple layers of glass. I have seen people use different diameter PVC piping (1", 4", etc) for custom guage applications I would post the link but it's against the rules. just go look around on glasmanscustomforum.com and it'll be there. Bondo is can be used on your situation, since you are doing a complete rebuild. we tell people not to bondo over the cushiony vynil on their dash because it will crack; seeing as how you won't have any you'll be fine. Good luck and keep posting.
