I have a f-150 and have quite a bit of experiecne with fiberglass so im looking to build some door panels or add onto the current factory ones. My problem is I cant find any info on the basics on going about doing it. I am capable of actually doing the fiberglass work its just that I dont know weather I need to mold the current panels and go from there, or glass onto the current ones and build up,etc. I thought about doing something similar to the link below but in the area that that have drawn a perimeter around in the pic below. It'd be a pain to recreate the whole door panel. It is hard to be very precise with such piece and you will also spend a load of money to cover such large area with fiberglass. Much easier and better is to create a mounting ring for your speaker. Put it on the door panel where you would like it to be, then trace the contour with a marker. Then cut this area out, lay your mounting ring where it would be and temporarily attach it with hot glue (or whatever you like), then use Duramix or a similiar product to bond it together. Of course, you can do it however you like it, but this is what I would do.

How easy is to to sand the duramix? I think ive looked over how the stuff reall works. Ive seen it used in a few projects but I thought it was more of a glue rather than soemthing that could be molded/sanded.

I never used Duramix, just read that people use it, and seems like it works well. I'm pretty sure it's the same as 3M EZ Sand Rigid Parts Repair, which is spread with a plastic spreader like body filler and then sanded. I also need to modify the door panels in my Dakota to fit new speakers, so this is what I'll be using.

I am getting ready to start door panels soon so heres what I am going to try. Next week I am going to the junk yard to pick up a set up panels. then I am going to lay down a real cool layer of resin to stiffen them up. Just dont go too hot or the panel might warp. When thats dry I am going to strip the vinyl off the front and lay down a couple of layers of glass and cutout what I dont want. I havent started yet, but this might help you out. The reason I am working off of stock panels is that are easy to glass, and it makes mounting a lot simpler.

i think you have the right idea man... i wouldn't not try to make a whole new panel as it is very hard and you couldn't get it to match exactly... but if your afriad to build right off your existing panels thats what i would do..... i would cut ur rings and position them as you want them then mold them right to the panel... cut the back out of the existing panel and ur set... this is the way i would do my next project but i didn't have much expierence with FG before my project
