i looked on US Compsite's web site and it showed around $55 per gallon of resin.  Is this about the going rate.  Is there anyone cheaper.  Where do you guys buy yours.

Check at the home depot I bought some from there and it was around $20 Per Gallon plus hardner For the bondo brand. I would check there before I buy it any where else for $55 then have to pay shipping and handling.

The 435 resin form U.S. Composites is $23.95. I used Bondo brand resin before I found this stuff. I will never go back to Bondo resin. The 435 wicks into the mat and fleece so much better. The mat from U.S. Composites is cheap for what you get also.

You're definitely better off buying from Home Depot or Lowes. By the the time you pay for shipping & that hazmat surcharge, youre gonna be paying a lot more. That $20 gallon Bondo brand resin does just fine..IMO posted_image

Is the 435 resin any stronger than the bondo brand.

Also, about how much will I need?  I will be doing 2 kickpanels and 2 subwoofer boxes behind the wheelwells in a 95 cavalier.  About how much resin would each project take.  Also, which one would you guys do first.  This will be my first fiberglassing and I want to do the easiest on first for practice.

Thanks for the help, hopefully one day I will be able to pass it on.

Although a subwoofer box would probally be easier, i think the kickpanel would be best to start.  This is because of rhe size, and if you mess up, its a lot less materials you wasted!

Just buy a gallon to be safe/economical. It makes no sense to have to keep running back to the store to buy smaller quarts.

my single sub box (about 1.2cubic feet) took an entire gallon and I had to quit early because I ran out (only 4 layers thick, instead of the 7 I was planning on)I'd say get two gallons. do your kick pannels and split the rest between the sub boxes to get them as strong as possible.

Alright.  Thanks for the help.

Is USComposites about the best price for the mat.  Do I need 3/4, 1 1/2, or 2 oz. mat.  If I understand right, It really wouldn't matter, I would just have to do more layers with a lighter mat, right.  About how much would I need if I used the 2 oz. mat.  The roll is 50 in wide.  Like mentioned above, I will make 2 kicks and 2 sub boxes.

Thanks for all your help,  this is my first fiberglass project and I'm still learning.  Thanks for helping me.

First off all the reason you should by resin from us composites is becasue that stuff is fresh, and 2 it is a ten times better quality. the problem with the bondo brand is one you dont know how long it has sat around and 2 its crap left over resin. There is no hazmat fee on one gallon cans another place that sells resin and mat and all of that stuff is select products .com they are around the same price as us but it is airplane qaulity resin. if you want a good first experience spend a little more and get the good stuff as you will come to find out the materials make the project work. One of the things you will experience with that green shaded crap resin from lowes, homedepot, autozone, pepboys is the worst thing of all it hardens to quick. the reason it hardens fast is becuase the shelf life of it has passed. Yes resin has a shelf life. This is the time in which it will be the most productive. if resin gets old it will work but not very good and things like hardening to fast will mess you up. go to selectproducts.com or us composite I promise you You'll be happy.
dont take my word for it. Buy 1 gallon from us or select. than by a pint or whatever from lowes or one of them. Mix up 250 ml each brand in its own cup. use the right amount of harder then time it or better yet dont use that much use a little. same difference.
what you are looking for in resin is one that is redish in color that is the good qaulity stuff. the greenish color is crap stuff(bondo brand)

If you want to go cheep i understand but the outcome and work time will be dramatically affected and will give you a bad taste in your mouth. I know for fact no fiction that selectproducts.com sells more than 120 gollons of resin in one month. so there stuff is never sitting around But they buy it from composite one which is another leader in material like that. Do the right thing you will not be sorry.

Is the 404 resin noticably better than the 435.  It is $28 per gallon compared to the 435's $24.  Is it woirth the extra $$$$$$.

Personaly I like the bondo stuff better.  It is a lot thicker and does not run, sets up more evenly and builds thicker than anything US Composites sells.  I used drums of the US stuff and have grown to hate it.

Yeah US seems to be a great place, bout to place an order there for stuff for my new box. Old box was made of autostore resin and fg mat. Expensive and as stated was old and set too fast (even w/ less activator).

As far as mat size you have a few options. You can go mat or cloth. Mat is cheaper and thinner, probably good for those doors. Go with .75 oz, and do a handfull of layers of that and you'll be fine. As far as sub boxes IMO i like the cloth better on that; 3 or 4oz cloth and do a few layers of that and it will hold up a 10" sub. Bigger subs or very powerful 10"s will need either more layers or a heavier cloth. And remember do a couple layers, let it set, sand it some and then do the next layer or two. Test the box with your thumb/finger. Push it in a perticular spot, if it flexes add more layers. Do this till you can no longer get a flex. Now stand on it. Does it hold you? Then you're doin good.

Disclaimer: I asume no responsibility for the people that go out and stand on their boxes and it breaks and they break an arm. It is a recomendation only, not a requirement. Oh and don't try driving over it, if you have it that thick it's overkill.
