This is my second and latest project.

I'm trying to redo my back dash.

I'm starting my second fiberglass project. It's my back dash. I'm going to try to get my amp molded in the center and the 6x9's pointing at an angle.I'm building this so that I can fill in the dents and low spots and make it flat. then I will make a mold of the original back piece and cut a hole for the amp and form two 6x9 rings on each side. with this layer being flat I can anchor down the amp and the appropriate places. I figure MDF would be too thick. I will screw down this layer to the hole where the old 6x9 holes were (so as to not make new ones) then screw down the amp. The next piece ) mold of original will fit right over just like it was originally made to so that I can remove it when necessary.

This is the base mold of the metal part of the back dash.

This is the base mold after some kitty hair filler and a little sanding.

These two pictures are of the actual back dash piece you would normally see. I taped it so I can lay fiberglass over it and make an exact replica of it. This is where I plan to remount the 2 6x9's and cut a hole in the center to explose the amp.

well I had this posted at another forum so I tried to cut and paste. I'll try to explain.

the 1st pictures you see are of the rear deck after I took off the rear deck cover piece. I did this because I want to install my amp there, however, that area is very uneven and if I installed my amp there it would overlap the 6x9's. So I replicated it and now I'm filling in the dents and making it even.

the piece that is taped in blue is the actual cover piece that covers the metal and 6x9's to make it look stock. well I don't want to sacrifice this piece, so I'm going to replicate this piece too. Once replicated, I will add the 6x9's on at an angle so that the amp can fit without overlaping the 6x9's, cut a hole of the amp (so that the top of the amp shows), cover in fleece, then resin, fill, sand and paint the color of the car.

okay okay, i think i get wut ur doin then.  are you going to make enclosures for the 6x9s or just mount them into the glass and have em free air?

no specific enclosure per say. it's two separate parts. I want to be able to get to the amp easily. So no the is no enclosure, but the two pieces (top and bottom) put together will sort of act as an enclosure. I'm not doing this project for the 6x9's. it's aimed at:

1. Honing my skills at glassing.
2. Showing off the amp in a non-typical way.
3. As a portfolio type project.

i'm just lookin out for you... i wouldn't steal someone's amp if is aw it in the window. i'd call them an idiot for leaving something like that in plain view though. if you want to ge rid of that amp, send it my way... before some junkie sells it for $50 and gets a few crack rocks.

Still, I seriously don't think a few bolts are gonna stop a "professional" thief from getting your equipment. Maybe you should buy something to cover it when you park the car anywhere else besides the front of your house. Your 1st box looks good, I can;t wait to see this rear deck project done. Good luck! posted_image

well, don't get me wrong, I am worried about theifs, but, my impression about thieves are that they are not there to unbolt, unscrew, or neatly rip off your gear. The faster they can get something and get out, the better. I understand the if a thief wants something bad enough, he'll get it. So cover or no cover, alarm, or no alarm, screw or bolts or no screw or bolts, in the end it won't matter. any and every systems is at risk. Hell right now the amp is just screwed to the trunk floor not much more security there than there is under a piece of bolted down fiberglass.

yeah thats a good point but

hows he going to know you have that amp bolted to the floor of the trunk, as opposed to displaying it in the window :D

I've add my car broken into before. the first thing they took was the stereo. they pulled the trunk release handle but it broke. Had the theif actually gotten in he woulda had the amp and speakers too. So it's not always whether they know or not, it's whether they check.

Some thieves are smart others are not. I hope not to encounter either of them. I know the risk and I'm willing to take. I'd be pretty pissed if I got robbed, but for now the gratification of seeing what I've done out weighs that. I appreciated the concern and the heads up you've given me, I'll definately keep it in mind, I have thought about putting a tshirt over it as well.

Look into getting you stuff insured if you're really worried about it, Farmers offers up to like $3500 in coverage, and for really hi end systems its well worth the investment of an extra $4 a month.

I have AUSA insurance from when I was in the army, I might check that out. thanks for the heads up. The project though is coming along pretty well. Especially considering that I'm kinda just figuring things out as I go as to where I want things, the wiring diagram I want and stuff like that.

I have news for you a "professional" will take it reguardless of what you have to prevent it ..  I knowa dude  had a FULL JL system stolen ..

4 subs , 6 amps , compo out of each door . flip down 15" tv , in dash tv EVERYTHING in a matter of  1 hour .. didn't break 1 door panel .. didn't break one dash peice the truck was FULLY SHAVED , no outside buttons for the poppers ..  The funny part was his $1000 alarm the placed in his driver seat  .

They probably would have stolen the hole truck IF the switchbox didn't have a lock on it .. there was no way they could get the truck off the ground and I BET  thats the only thing that stopped them fron taking it !

if they want it bad enuff they will get ir REGUARDLESS of what you have to prevent it ..

I said the same thing. They'll get it if they want it. That also goes the other way though. Unless a pro gets me. I'm trying to keep an honest man honest, and rookie scared and outta there fast before he gets a .45 in his theiving ass.

I had a nifty security thing on my Neon.  I glued some razor blades so you could barley see them under the door handles.  It worked!  I know becuase someone tried real hard to open the driver side door, and there was blood all over the door.  He/She never got in.

Once someone also tried to break into my Avenger.  They tried too hard and broke my drive side door handle.  Never got in....
