i never knew anything about fg until couple of months ago.  im very interested in making my own design and fg enclosure, but i was wondering what is the total cost of the whole project? i have very little money to spend thats why.  can you please post your fg enclosure and price so i can roughly estimate how much my project is going to cost.

ive probably spent close to 300 dollars cdn on materials(paint brushes, latex gloves, respirator mask, masking tape, tinfoil, and wood.) and am close to being half way, mind u i still need to buy sandpaper, body filler and paint.

what exactly are you building how big? it all varies on what ur doing.

you can see most of the stuff ive done. its not cheap, its alot more affordable to build a box out of wood. but the benifits to fiberglass outway the price any day.

That's a very open ended question and will totally depend on how you wish to finish the enclosure ( paint, carpet or vinyl ) ,where you buy your materials from, how many subs your going to have and finally , what vehicle this is going into.

Personally I find there is a "hidden" cost with FG. You will spend a few hours at least sanding, bondo, sanding. If you are doing it for yourself, that's one thing, but if you're making a box for someone you have to put a price on your hours spent sanding.

It's not part of the materials but I always factor in at least a hundred bucks worth of sanding for a sub enclosure.

Maybe a bit less for some kick panels.

i just spent $3000..yea three thousand dollars.. But i also tricked out my garage so i can do alll sorts of fun stuff with fiberglass!

Is there a topic anywhere that talks about where to get a bulk supply of fiberglass mat and other materials? I have chekced up on UScomposites.com and selectproducts.com, but i was wandering if there was anything else? Thanks

LOL!!!!!   I would like to announce a special congradulations to crazyoldcougar!  Youve been waiting for that 100....for editing was it?  Either way good job!

Since Im already here.  There is not an answer to your question, revjolly, and Welcome to The12Volt.com's Forum, and our world of fiberglassing.  Different people have different tastes as well as different fabricators have different concepts, ethics, and mindset.  I myself desire perfection as much as possible.  I build to suit.  I also build certain parts so that they are removeable so that access beyond the parts created is possible for future wiring and such.  Also certain parts can be built in sections so that damage can be repaired to the one component and not have to remove the whole thing from the vehicle.  As far as concept, I build with minimal waste.  And then theres planning...  The end product price also depends on what exactly your are fabricating, and what size it is.  Subwoofer enclosure?  Fabricated dash?  Fabricated interior panels?  Ground Effects?  Body/Widebody kit?  Hood Scoop?  Spoiler?  Rear pans, tailgate skins, headliner, headliners with overhead consoles, center consoles, splash pans, bed covers, wheel wells, and............. All have thier hidden costs in ways.

Here in Arkansas, this is a little detail for some education.  I only buy in bulk, therefore my costs are different, so these are NEAR going prices of local stores.  5/8 Inch MDF = $18 per 4x8 sheet.  Fiberglass Mat or Weave sheet - 8 sq. ft. = $4.  Fleece price depends on which type of fleece you buy...go shop, its not much.  Body filler - cheep stuff (you dont need ANY top of the line stuff) = $11/gal for Dynalite w/hardener.  Glaze putty coat (once again, Rage Gold is NOT a necessity, no name cheap stuff does work) = $7/qt. w/ hardener.  Sand paper, you need 30 grit all the way up to 4000 grit, go shop its not much.  Polyester Resin w/ cat = $22/gallon.  Screws, staples, and whatever small hardware or fasteners you/the job requires = go shop.  Brushes - use 3 inch chip brushes = $8/ per 12 pack - (https://da.harborfreight.com/cpisearch/web/search.do?keyword=brush).  Spray adhesive = $7/can.  1 can of expanding insulation foam (not really required, but one day after your hooked, youll want to experiment)  = $6/can.  Thats enough for you to figure on, but not enough to get a final price because of details.  You can count on several layers of fiberglass mat or weave as required, which also requires a linear amount of polyester resin for each application.

Heres some references for other side info:  https://capndsboatshed.com/fiberglassmaterials.htm

......just to name a few, but the first one has a good outlook for beginners.

The actual fiberglass materials aren't really what's expensive. It's the tools for various projects. I needed:

1. Router

2. Sander

3. Dremel

4. Respirator

5. Safety Goggles

6. Staple Gun

here is what I paid for just some of the materials. It's a school project so I'm able to use their resin and fiberglass, aswell as saws and what not.

Tools

Heavy Duty Respirator              24.88
60 Grit alm/oxy sandpaper         3.00
Staple Gun                  16.59
               Total     $44.47

Materials

¼ sheet of MDF                  7.99
3 x 1-1/2 x60yd tape 1.49x3     4.47
Fleece                              3.73
½ in. Staples                2.95
               Total $16.14

This is in no way a complete list, you'll need a bunch of different grits of sandpaper, brushes, a way of finishing it off (paint, vinyl, leather, etc). Basically if you're real short on cash right now I'd hold off on building one.

Depends on time spent and the finish. (paint , vinyl, carpet) Materials are not that expensive in relation.
