I had an extra set of focal components laying around so i thought to myself "HEY why not custom mount them in your door panels" Well here are the pics. Its still a work in progress but i think you will get the basic idea.

This was the plan.

Subs? I have a pair of MTX 8500 12"ers in the trunk.

Date Posted: May 20, 2006 at 4:23 PM
great, do you have them ported or sealed? how do they sound? the reason why i ask you is because i had plan to buy 3 12" 8500 then 4 12" 8500 but when i spoke with different people who have experience with mtx and at that time they all told me not to go with 8500's but with 7500's that 4 12" 7500's will read more spl number(thus louder) than 4 12" 8500's, because they're more efficient.
and i only have experience with 5500, 7500, 9500 series not those 8500's that's why i asked you how they sound. I now have 4 of 7512-04 and i'm very happy with their performance, and very happy that i've listen to them when they told me to go with the 7500 series, they are great sub imo compared with 5500 and the 9500's.

Aruman - I have the 2 8500 in a ported enclosure approximately 4.5 total ft^3 I have it more setup for SQ rather than SPL so I cant really help you in that department. They are still the loudest pair of 12"s that ive ever heard. They are getting a total 2ohm power of approximately 1200 watts RMS. I have an external bass control knob so they arent usually played all that hard. They can sure punch you in the pace when need be. ha. 4 12" subs will always produce more than 3 12" subs of equal or close to equal quality due to pure surface area.

The Rah - the speakers are mounted to 1/2" mdf rings.

Ah yes, the joys of bondo and sanding on doorpanels. I am so glad that I am done that stage of the game. Does it fit? Nope, add more bondo, sand it down and check again.....oh look at that, too much sanded off, add some more and sand again.......

Great and thanks, Killer. yes 4 12" will be louder than 3 12" subs, depend on the installation. but when i spoke with some expert about that at that time when i didn't know much about car audio, they told me that both with the proper power, the 4 12" 7500 will be louder than even 4 12" 8500 who in theory suposed to be louder that the 7500's. you are more on the SQ side like you said you have an SQ setup. anyways, thanks for your time, killer. posted_image

Yes, that foam is the best. It is a 2 part liquid that you mix together. Once it sets, you can cut it, sand it, and apply the resin directly to it and it doesnt dissinigrate. awesome awesome stuff.

It is uerethane foam. You can google it to find the cheapest prices. The stuff I got expands 30 times its size so a little goes a long way. here is a link to the stuff.

i FINALLY got it finished......Well almost. It isnt installed yet and I made a stupid mistake. I accidentally got a little bit of contact cement on one of the plastic covers for one of the crossovers. so what do I do? I went ahead and used goof off to clean it. well little did I know but that stuff melts plastic. So now I hav eto go get a thin piece of plexi and use that as a cover now. I suppose I could sand the plastic up to 3000grit and flame polish it but that requires a lot of work. Maybe ill try it later on. Anywho.... here are the pics. I will post more once I actually get it back in the car.

Noticed you are running some MTX speakers. I'm running the TXC6.1 in the front powered by a Thunder 8502 and thinking of buying a single 9512-44. How do your 8500's sound? I have heard they are louder but not heard any real comparison between the 9500's and 8500's.

I love em. Im overpowering the crap out of them and they are just eating it up. I have them in a box built more for SQ so it doesnt get all that loud. I had them metered for SPL one day just cause the show I was at was free. They clocked in at 137.4DBs. Had I actually tuned the amp and deck for SPL Im sure I could have hit low to mid 140s. Im very happy with it though. As far as the speakers in the door panel goes, those are focal

Ya i knew the door speakers were Focal :) So have you had any experience with the 9500 series? I'm wondering if the 8500 would be just as good. I am currently running 2 10 inch memphis which hit really well but they don't go as low and I want my entire system to be MTX anyway.

i think the 9500s are not worth the money.  personally I wish I would ahve went with 4 7500 10"s instead of 2 8500 12"s. oh well.  if you did want to keep the subs you have Id recommend building a different box that will let you hit the lower tones. I have my box tuned to 41Hz but it still plays the 20hz range pretty well.

Ya, part of the problem is that I made a sealed box for them. I took them out of my truck and wanted to just make a quick box for the bug and sealed was the easiest. I know with a ported box I would be able to hit the lows better but I got lazy lol. Plus the fact I want all MTX so the 10's won't stay either way. So you don't think the 9500's are worth it huh? Your the second person I have actually heard say that. I might check more into the 8500's and see what I come up with. Thanks for the info!

When I got back from my deployment I had plenty of cash and had planned on buying 2 9500 12"s. After much deliberation, I decided to go with the 2 8500s and over power the crap out of them. it gave the the same result without spending the extra money and adding the extra weigt in the car. That is really the only "complaint" I have about the 8500s. you ahve to build a decent sized bullet proof box which weighs a ton plus the speakers weigh 50lbs a piece. I had to put spring spacers in my rear springs just to get the rear of the car to normal ride height.

Lol awesome :) Well at least I won't have to lower my car then since the box and speaker will most likely do it for me :) I'm guessing you made the box completely out of wood then? I'm going to make a custom fiberglass box so should be much lighter...as far as the box goes. Also I don't think I need 2 12's. The 2 10's hit far better then expected so I would imagine the single 12 will do as well or better. It's in a bug for crist sake lol. Much more boom and my window might go boom.

Aceracer24 don't go with 9500 or 8500's, go with the 7500's they are more effiecient and they have great SPL with less power and in sealbox, i'm very happy with them. i know i don't have any experience with the 8500's but when i went to buy the 8500 series 4 of them my MTX dealder told me not to go with them, to go with the 7500's so i was confused about that why in the H.. don't go with 8500???, so i went online and ask different people, so i came to an website of MTX in Europe where the guy there have experience with all MTX subs and he also told me the same, so now i have 4 7500, and they hit pretty damn hard. here's a pic of my current system, i'm still not finish, when i finish my car i'll post more pics of my system and car. posted_image

Nice install aruman! I bet that does hit retty good. Does the MTX sticker give you added horsepower? lol just kiddin man.

Aceracer - Yes the box is made out of wood. When building a ported box it is easiest to make it out of wood with all right angles. If you use fiberglass and make the box with curves it becoes a lot more difficult to claculate airspace to use the right port. Honestly I think you would be happy with 1 10" sub in your car if its going to be in the car of the car.

Well for the glass box I was going to use packing peanuts to get a fairly accurate cube for the box. I'll use mdf board as a divider and move it over until I get the right cubic feet then glue it in and start wrapping in fleece. That should be me in the ball park and I plan to go at the min volume. But then I am not even sure I will port it or not anyway. Still have to get the speakers which now I am having a hard time deciding what ones to get lol. Well either way I stil need to build the amp rack and I have plenty of time to decide what I will do. I do appreciate all the advice you guys are giving...although it's made things harder to decide :)

It does look a little funky under the door handle like there should be something there thats not. Oh and the obvious...what the hell are you going to do with 15 speakers :)Looks great man!

what??? lol its only 5 subs (2 x 12", 2 x 6", and 1 x 10") and the 5 surround speakers up front (4 x 6.5", 2 x 4", and 4 tweets). I was planning on competing for sound quality for IASCA but there arent any comps in my area for it this year. I guess I'll have to stick with the crappy local ones.

5 subs thats just insane lol. I can understand the 12's and i can understand thre 6's but why the single 10? Doesn't that conflict witht he 2 12's? Also....JL 6W0s! Them  look really nice. I saw them at a shop yesterday. How do they sound? MTX has what they call a mid base speaker but.....it's not to the same quality as the JL . They seem to small to be true mid base but more like regular mids. How much did you pay for the JL 6W0s?

Aceracer - I have the 2 x 12"s on a switch. The 2 x 6"s and the 1 x 10" are on a seperate switch. When im driving around town and downt want to draw attention from thugs and cops, I only have the 6"s and the 10" playing. The 6W0s are really nice. I got them for $100 for the pair (that includes a 4 year warantee). You have to be very careful with the amount of power you give them. I blew one because I was giving it about twice its rated power in a box that was too big for it.

blufab - Its called suede flocker. Its technically not fabric. Do a google search for the stuff. Its pretty cool

sceisi14 - I like how it looks too but I still need to cover them so rain will never touch them when the door is open.

I'd run them off the same amp I am running my components. The amp puts out about 125 RMS per channel..it's a 2 channel amp. The comps are rated for 150 so I doubt I would be putting to much power into them. I'm curious though if adding these would be a good idea. Would these be worth putting in? Hard for me to tell if there are gaps in the audio frequencies or not between my sub and my components.

So you are saying youd be running your components and 2 x 6W0s off a 2 channel amp?? That sounds to me like its too much for one amp. If you are thinking about running your components together at 2 ohm on 1 channel and the 2 subs off of the other channel at 2, 4, or 6ohm (the 6W0s come in 4 ohm, 8 ohm and 12ohm) Then you are going to lose a lot of sound quality. Plus if the comps are rated at 150rms then you will only be giving them 62.5rms if the amp really puts out as much as its rated. I would get a 4 channel amp if you want to run it all off of one amp. And yes the 6w0s are definitely worth it in my opinion. Im running mine as the rear speakers with a high pass freq of 125Hz and the low pass of 315Hz. When I turn off the switch for the 6W0s there is a huge noticable difference in the sound spectrum.

The amp is rated at 125 but MTX always under rates their amps. They are actually pushing more towards 198 RMS if the spec sheet is anything to go by. I thought about that though, I would still loose some of the watts for the fronts but I don't think it would be all that much, not enough to really tear the system down at any rate. And no, I wouldn't split the channels either. I'd loose the stereo if i did that and like you said sound would go out the window. The reason I didn't go a 4 channel amp in the first place was because the 8502 gave out more watts per channel @4 OHMS then the highest 4 channel in their line up. I can always add a 3rd amp if i needed to at any rate since it wouldn't need to be as a very big amp. As of right now i am just talking out my *** since I still need to get a new sub. I'm just thinking out loud :)

Oh ok. I didnt know it was a MTX amp. Gotta love their underratings. Im still confused how you were planning on running the components and 2 subs off the 2-channel amp. or did I mis-interpret what you said? You could always go all out and get the MTX 1004 if you can find one. it is rated at 125RMS x 4 but it also costs a pretty penny and its a huge amp. Im not too sure youd have a good place to put it in your beetle without getting all crazy custom. Im sure there is a newer MTX amp that does the same ratings but im not a big fan of the new amps with the extant technology (thunder TA). Ive heard too many stories of them needing to be replaced by the guys who sell them in my area. Apparently they arent too reliable. Im still waiting to hear how their newest amps (thunder TC) are holding up.

Well I'm not entirely sure how I would run them other then just wiring them up to the same terminals as the comps are. My original plan, and I still maybe do this, was to buy the TXC 6.0 which is the exact same speaker that comes in the TXC 6.1 comp set. It comes with it's own X-over and MTX shows it being run off of the same amp as the TXC 6.1's. So I figure I would do the same. Only reason I am not sure I want to go with the TXC 6.0 is that it might not be able to fill in the freq either if the front set can't. You know what i mean? The other option is to run the 6W0s off of the sub amp with proper x-overs obviously. As far as amp space, I'm building an amp rack in the trunk area that if I design it right will have more then enough room for the current amp set up using 2 amps. If I needed to use a 3rd am for the 6W0s I can always stick that under the seat.

I see what you are saying now. The MTX site shows the 6.1 crossover conected to the 6.0 crossover. Im not sure if that would work with the 6W0 because it doesnt come with a crossover because it is a true subwoofer, not a midrange speaker. I would jus tplay it safe and get a 3rd amp. Im running both of mine off of a mtx 202. 1 sub off of each channel. I used to have a 202 bridged for each 6W0 but that was just a little too much power for them. I have both of my 202s mounted under my front seats. They are small and easy to hide.

no it doesn't come with a crossover but i am sure I could find/make one. Either way your probably right, I should just go with another amp. I actually fought over getting a 4 channel or the current 2 channel amp because I knew I would eventually install rear speakers. I opteded for the 2 because of the higher watt per channel that I needed currently.
