From the looks of it you need to soak the matting more. I see alot of white in the last few pics. The spots that are not resined will be soft and will be a problem when you add more layers onto the enclosure to thickness. Also, make sure that you do at least 3-4 layers before you remove the mold from the trunk because of warping.

Heres a little tip for ya. Instead of trying to coat the whole area at once, do little areas at a time and make sure the mat is thoroughly soaked. its looking good so far though.

ok ive come to a conclusion . bondo brand resin sucks! why is it so thick? its like it just dont want to soak through the mat . i know a guy that order resin from some company . its really thin compared to bonda resin . is thin resin easier to soak through mat?it seems like thick resin would be better soaking though fleece or something. help me out guys never done a "big" fiberglass project before.oh yea the resin that guy gets comes in a gallon jug. he said its like 30 bucks sound decent priced? thanks all

$30 sounds about right. I like the elmers brand resin you can buy at Lowes. I know home depot carried it for a while but i think they switched back to the bondo brand. I never had any trouble with the bondo resin though. What is your method of apply the resin to the mat? I find it easiest to use a cheap bristle painters brush and dap the resin onto the mat.

Go to www.westmarine.com and use the store locator to see if theres a store near you.  They sell gallon sized containers of resin for around $30 and it will work much better than bondon brand.  Also buy some cheap disposable paint brushes from walmart (like $0.60 a piece) and trim the bristles down to about an inch.  You can use it to sort of push the resin into the mat.  You might as well go ahead and stock up on cheap paint brushes or atleast acetone.

if you have a harbor freight store in your area they are always having sales on their boxes of 2" painters brushes. Usually you can get a box of 36 brushes for $9 or something like that. a quarter for a brush isnt bad.

i bought like 10 of the cheapest brushes walmart had they was like 60 or 80 cents each . the brissles are only like an inch long and maybe 3 inches wide. these are the same brushes ive used since the project start . i just soak the brush with resin and just kinda dab it on the mat until it looks soaked .but it seems like it should soak better .maybe im just new to using mat . ive always used cloth on smaller projects i think it works great . i might go get some cloth and try it for a while. is there a big difference between cloth and mat ? strong wise? thanks guys you all been helpful

This shot looks great showing the layers of raw fiberglass in the place you want it to be, and it conforms to your area well.  Like Jeff (Velocity) said up above, you still have some white areas, indicating the resin was not absorbed well in that area.

The 3M Super77 product you used was alright, but it is a better idea to let the resin be your adhesive.  You want your resin to soak from the top of your layer(s) all the way down to where the masking tape is, and it will change the color from white, to the color of the resin when properly soaked.  It will be almost "see through" in a sense.

Other than that little tid bit.  The project is looking really damn good.

Are you only putting the enclosure on one side?

well as of right now i only have a sony explod 1300 watt amp. it pushes the sub ok . but just dont think it would look good fiberglassed. i bought the amp from a bud of mine for 60 bucks. i thought it was a good deal. maybe if i get a better looking amp i will do one more on the right side.

pimp, about your earlier question, yes there is a major difference in strength between cloth and mat...cloth is only strong across it's weave, generally axila strengh is in one direction or biaxailly (2 directions) fiberglass mat consists of long strand fibers bonded at any and all angles, thus giving it strength in all directions...

looks pretty sweet so far for a shell..two tiny tips though that will make life a little easier next time around...
1. tear your mat, it will blend together easier with one and other pieces, and not leave you any bumps at the edges.
2. draw your out line onto the masking tape, when you fiberglass over it, it will transfer onto the shell.

other then that keep up the good work, and yeah select products is a pretty common brand for DIY'ers...evercoat also makes decent resin.
