I want to upholster my 03 civic coupe headliner with black suede.  i have 3M's hi-strength super 90 and 77 glue cans.  now my question is, should i remove the old fabric?  could i glue on top of the old fabric for cushion?  or should i glue 1/8 foam, then glue suede on foam? preferrably 90 rather than 77?

rip that old crap right off and use something to get the fine stuff that gets stuck on it like some sand paper do it lightly to get everything if it does not come off when you pull it off and the glue you used have used the same stuff with no problems (the 90) and make sure you put glue on both sides and start in the middle then work your way out. and i would glue the suede to the foam then glue that down to the headliner

I'm pretty sure your factory headliner is some type of fiberboard/ cardboard.  I would try  to just go over it.

yeah thats what i would imagine. i just did my arm rest, just a small project to play with, and it came out great.  i couldve used the original foam on the armrest but i replaced with with polyester batting.  im gonna do the same with the headliner, but im not putting the batting.  the headliner feels like it is glued right on the cardboard.  thanks for the help guys. appreciate it

I just did the headliner in my Suburban and I left the factory material in place. I tried removing it from half the headliner and it didn't work as well.

I've done several headliners in suburbans. First I recommend you remove the old material if it has sagged anywhere. If it hasn't sagged and doesn't have any tears you can go over the old. If you're using something like suede that you want a good smooth surface. A wire brush on a drill and carefully skimming the surface can provide a good surface. One of the most important things is the glue. I've tried the 3M super glue and they are ok but if you are in a warm climate they will not hold. I've been buying my headliner material from a local upholstery supply place (better price on material than fabric store) that also carries high-temp glue. It is worth the money at about $6-7 a can. It is less likely to let loose especially if your putting new material over old.
