Robert;

Maybe you have heard of using polar fleece as an alternative to glass matt.  Fleece is easier to work with and if your mixture of resin and MEKP is correct the finished product is much easier to sand as well.  Also you could try mixing one batch of resin and MEKP and apply that and while the matierial is still wet mix and apply a batch of half bondo (polyester based) and resin with some MEKP and let it dry.  The second layer of Bondo/resin will not only add strength but it will also render your project easier to sand and get smooth.  Stretch the fleece over a rigid structure like MDF and glue or staple it to the back, (make sure to create and mount some speaker rings under the fleece with hot glue and backstrap).  Then proceed to resin it then resin/ bondo mix.  I was tought this technique by my instructors at Mobile Dynamics so this method has been prooven, plus it will be an easy first step into the world of fiberglass.  Good luck!!!!
