Decent Fiberglassed Ports?

Hello all.

Im getting ready to fiberglass my first box, and I was wondering what you all do to make ports look decent after fiberglass? Ive seen some ideas with PVC ports and then you can use covers, but I would prefer something a bit different.

Kinda tossing ideas around before I spend a bunch of money and hate the project and have to start over. Thanks alot!

I am not a big fan of covering ports..it can effect the sound. I have a formula for converting round ports to any shape but if you can find a program to do this you will be alot better off..the math is insane.

Some cool things can be done with acrylics and LEDS, backlighting, plexi etc.

How about polished stainless? Maybe you can get some large stainless tubing scraps from a high performance shop and polish it, I have not seen that before. You could have it bent into a cool shape maybe, or experiment with flaring..well your imagination is the only limit.

Kind of a noob question, but do i need to point the ports in the same direction as the subs? If not I could port them out the back of the box and then not have to worry about the look of them. I was thinking of using some grille mesh people use on their body kits, maybe paint it and make a nice surround for it, but the box will be painted and that would kill the look.

The ports should be on the same plane as the subs otherwise cancellation becomes an issue. Using plexi adds a nice look as a border with some led accent lights.

ah... if you give me the math, i can plug it into a simple flash based calculator...

What subs are you using and air space is the box and if you draw a simple sketch of what you want it to look like. This sort of info can give everyone an idea of what your after and help you design the port in detail. If Maglin does the math on the size don't forget to add if you want a slot port, round port, or horn port. All these are important to a decent sounding box. Good luck and I'll check back later.

I want to take up all the space in the rear. The subs are xtant 104s

The box i have now, built per xtant specs, sounds really good. Its tuned to around 28hz but I have slight port noise if you listen to the subs from the back of the car.

I would like to do some slotted ports, that way i could put them on the bottom of the box where they wouldnt really be noticeable. I want the box to come close to the top of the rear seats.

My plan is to build the boxes for the subs separate and then build the fiberglass around them. Sound is very important in this build, that is why I am choosing to do it that way. I also want to flush mount the amps facing the rear of the car.

Im going to paint the box the color of the car.

Im a painter so the body work isnt an issue.

Dont know how to edit a post on here. But I have even thought about cutting that box in half, putting sides on it and using it as a base for the rest of my box.

What formulas do you need?

every and any you have for building these boxes. its very easy to write formula calculators and what not to make it so you never have to tinker with the formula... just pop in what information you have, and away you go.

looks like master5 was the one with the formula btw.
