I have heard about clearance requirements (to the side) when doing down firing subwoofers. The equation was, I believe, cone area * (# of subs) / 2. Could anyone confirm this? Also, is this just a general rule of thumb, and if so, could I get away with a number 10-20% smaller?

Thanks.

I"m curious, what do you mean "to the side"? Clearance away from a wall (or whatever) or clearance from say the floor to the sub?
