I have an 04 Ram, with a custom .75 dual 10" enclosure that resides under the rear seat (Quad Cab Ram). I have had it for about a year or so and I am unable to figure out why it sounds like one of the subs are blown.
One day it started to baffle or distort, so I assumed it was a blown Sub (I have two Alpine E series to a Kenwood 9012D Mono Amp). But when I went to pull the unit out and put pressure on the box it stopped distorting. I pulled the box out and it sounds hrrible (only one side) and when I push on it it is fine, so I am assuming it is the box, however it is a sealed box and I get no air coming out as if it seperated.
Is there a way to verify the box (MDS construct) is seperated or cracked? If no air is flowing out of the box and the sub is fine?
Switch the sub locations (left to right).If the problem is still on the same side the box is the problem. Leaks can not always be easily heard but two edges of MDF vibrating can make a nasty sound. If you want to track down a leak, build an installers stethoscope. Go and buy 4’ of ¼” clear plastic tubing from your local hardware store. Put one end near your ear and use the other end to probe the box for leaks while it is playing. Even the slightest leak will sound quite loud when you pass over it. Once you have found your leak you will need to bond the joint together as well as stop air from passing in and out of the box. Sealing the leak with silicone alone will not remedy your problem.
