I am doing an installation in my friends audi a6 using the metra dash kit and a pioneer doubledin cage kit. The metra dash kit has a smooth finish to it, but the pioneer trim ring is textured abs plastic. How can I get it a smooth finish to decently match the dash kit? I sanded it smooth but it was real chalky. I primed it and painted it black, but it just isnt coming out smooth enough. The spray can is not giving it a smooth finish. Is there any process to remove the texture on abs plastic and give it a nice smooth finish???
put several coats of a high build primer on it and sand the primer smooth......if you sand thru to the abs you do not have enough primer on the piece....try that
i just recently did some mods to a subaru where i had to repaint all the dash peices. heres the process.
1: spray at least 2 coats of plastic primer (available from most paint manufacturers)
2: sand primer smooth with 400g wetsand
If you want to keep a flat look use Tool Dip rubber spray over the primer. proceed if you wand a glossy look.
3: wipe clean with damp lint free cloth then spray 2 to 4 coats of plastic paint (whichever color) allow for full cure time (usually 5-7 days)
4: wet sand from 600g-800g-1500g-2000g using soap and water
5: using buffing compound buff whole peice by hand
6: using polishing compound polish by hand
7: aply high quality automotive wax for high shine.
