I'm an installer of 2-way radios and other communication solutions. The company I work for usually installs clamshells onto the floor-board with self-tapping screws such as these:
Hex Head Screws
I have two questions:
1. What type of screws do you use?
2. What type of visual check do you do before drilling?
I'd appreciate any input or suggestions.

That screw is known as a "taptight" here in the UK. I use the same with panhead (flanged head) Philips/Pozidrive.
Look underneath for pipes, wiring under the vehicle.

Not much to add to what howie ii said, other than be absolutely sure of what you are drilling the screw into both inside the vehicle as well as any place under the vehicle that you may penetrate such as lines and gas tanks ect. Use only the depth screw necessary to penetrate carpet, padding and then the metal you are trying to get to. The best course of action is to try not to pick a location where the screw will pull free from the metal because it is too thin if at all possible. If you are not certain of a location, just find an alternate mounting location you feel safe with.

Back in the days of under seat auto changers and amps, I found that Velcro was indispensable. And no vehicle damage!

I'm wondering why you wouldn't rather epoxy pieces of thin fiberboard between the floor and carpet and drill into that?
