I know Pioneer sells a Lightning kit, I remember reading somewhere that if you plugged an iPhone with a 30 pin connector directly into the USB without the pioneer cable it would work for music but not mirror mode. Assuming that was legit, would I be able to plug my iPhone 6's usb cable into the USB cable on the HU and control my music? I don't care about mirror mode, I just ordered my phone today and don't want to order the pioneer cable unless I absolutely need it.

It will play music and allow you to control what is playing by using the cable that comes with your new phone.
