if i have a bluetooth usb adapter on my computer, cant i connect to that with my phone and surf the net via my existing broadband computer connection?

I believe this only works if your phone has a "Dial-Up" profile and your PC can communicate through that profile.

I'm not sure on the specifics though.

The only way I have seen it done is by using a program on the computer, such as Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools to connect the phone.  Then, through that program you can use the phone to dial-up connect to the internet.  I have a RAZR I connect to my laptop through an internal bluetooth card and can use the RAZR to connect to the internet.  Although, be warned, you may get charged by Verizon for data transfer fees and such.
