I just received a motorola hf850 bluetooth kit and I want to install it in my 1990 grand am. The installation seems pretty simple even for me who has no idea what he's doing.  I did have some questions though that I was hoping I'd be able to get some guidance on.  The bluetooth kit comes with a wire to attach to your radio to take advantage of the mute feature it may have. The issue is that this radio doesn't have a mute feature. I was led to believe I can still get it to do the same thing if I use a relay. Specifically using a standard Bosch automotive relay. So the first question is, is that a possibility and if there's any detail you guys can give would be fantastic.

The second question is that this kit comes with a separate external speaker but I'm under the impression that I can use my car speakers instead. Any advice on how to do this? Thanks for the help.

Anyone? Anyone?

At this point I'm ok with using the speaker it came with unless anyone wants to give me guidance on how to go through the factory speakers. More importantly though, is the muting feature and whether I can use a relay to achieve what I am trying to do. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks

I install these all the time.  Actually I did one today for a 2006 Ford Explorer.  If your car doesnt  have a mute wre you can interrupt the acc wire with a relay.  In other words, the radio will shut off when you receive a call and turn back on when it ends the call.  Find the acc wire and cut it and run one to 87a and the other to 30.  Tap into the acc wre that receives power to 86 and the orange wire from the HFK to 85.  The 850 doesnt really have a way to seperately connect your factory speakers to it.  the HFK 1000 does and the new Moto T605.

Enice thanks so much for the help. Although it seems like at this point that to me is running before I even begin to crawl. I'm completely baffled by the problem I am encountering. Since you install these all the time maybe you can take your generous help one step further. I have installed the kit (without the relay yet) and I can't seem to get it to work. I have all the connections right, I believe (green wire to ignition switch on radio harness, red wire to constant 12 on radio harness, black to ground). I tested each lead on the junction box and there is juice being distributed, but for some reason I cannot get the user interface module to power up. No lights, no indication of life...nothing. I thought maybe it was just a bad connection with the user interface module so I exchanged it and still nothing. I've gone over all the connections 100 times but I can't figure it out. It would be one thing if I had no juice coming to the box, but I do, and all the other pieces are getting juice (mic and speaker) but the user interface module just won't light up. What the heck am I doing wrong?

For your reference I am connecting the red wire from the hf850 to the orange wire on the radio harness and the green wire from the hf850 to the yellow wire on the harness and I'm grounding the black to the chassis. Anything ridiculously obvious you see that I'm doing that is incorrect?

Although I haven't really seen this issue, you can disconnect the power harness going to the junction box and reconnect.  It could of gotten frozen.  Your connections are fine.  Another thing I would check is the ground.  It could be a bad ground.  To test the ground if you have a Digital DMM is to tap the red lead to the orange wire and the black to the ground wire you have.  If you have a test light you can connect the clamp to that ground wire and tap the orange wire to see if the light comes up.  The kit should light up right away after you plug the power in the junction box.

Enice,

Thanks again so much. I'm going to give that one a shot and see what happens. I'll keep you posted.

Enice,

I just wanted to let you know that I tried your suggestion and it works perfectly. It was the ground. It was a bad connection. Thanks again so much, I'm excited to have this thing working. My next project is going to be to try the relay. Just to make sure I understand the way this works, when you say the acc wire I'm assuming that's the ignition switch one which is currently connected to the green wire on the HFK. So basically I'm snipping that one and connecting the powered end to 87a and the other to 30. The orange wire from the kit to 85. As far what goes to 86, would I be able to use the constant 12 or should I stick with the acc wire? As always thank you so much.

Yes you can but remember, since you are cutting the acc wire connect the green wire of the HFK to the side that is getting 12v no matter ! what.  As for the ACC wire, yes you can use the 12v acc and is highly suggested since the relay would not be energized when the vehicle is off.  Good Luck
