I would like to add 3-4 neon tubes in my trunk, but I am not sure how to go about doing it. They would be standard 10" tubes with cigarette lighter adapters. I would like them to come on when the trunk is opened like my OE light, and also have the option of turning them off via toggle switch. Can I cut the lighter adapters off and wire them into my current OE wiring with a toggle without blowing a fuse? I have been told I cannot exceed 15 amps for this particular wiring/light. Is there a better/smarter/more proper way to do this? I am open to all advice/suggestions. Thanks.

The best way to do this would be to use a relay. If you don't know relays this should help. First thing to do is to cut the cigarette lighter adapters and find out which wire is for 12V and which wire is for ground. Once you have that figured out then ground all of the ground wires and run the power wires to a common point. Next step is to find the trunk pin wire, tag it and run it to the same place as the power wires for the neon. You will then need to run a source of power(fused of course) to that point. At this point wire the relay as follows: 85 - +12V, 86 - trunk pin(if you want a switch then put it in line with this wire), 30 - +12V, an 87 the wires coming from the neon tubes. You may have to use two relays if the current totals above thirty amps, just follow the same steps as above just wire two tubes to each relay. If you do it this way the neon will turn on when the trunk is open and you can turn it off with a switch.

Thanks! I am not familiar with resistors, but I'll read up on them. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.
