Subject: blinking angel eye

Ok I have an 09 Lancer. I have recently ordered angel eyes for the headlights. When I lock or unlock my car the parking lights will flash like a lot of cars. And I was goin to wire my angels eyes with a constant hot and break the ground with a switch. Here is what I am wishing to do. I want to make my angel eyes flash with the parking lights when the car is locked or unlocked and still for other times be able to use the switch to turn them on and off when I am just sittin around. My first thought was to splice into the ground and run it thru a relay which would be attached to the parking light so it would blink when the car was locked. But i now thought i dont want them to stay on when my parking lights are on like while driving. Can anyone help me to build a setup that will work for me, I think i am just overthinking it some.

Thanks

Josh

since the relay is only needed for the purpose of changing polarity and not to amplify current, why not just connect the switch after the relay has changed polarity, that way you can switch it on and off whilst you're sitting around, and driving, and you can leave it on when you want it to flash with your alarm, doing it this way though will only allow you to turn on the angel eyes when the parking lights are on, whether the car is on or off, if you had another way in mind as regards to the manner in which you wanted it to work post back,( or if you had that idea already, read my screen name underneath.)

Here's what I came up with:

posted_image

Basically, if the ignition is off the parking lights will control the angel eyes.  If the car is running the parking lights will have no effect on them.  This provides no protection if you were to walk away from the car with them turned on, since you stated you wanted them tied directly to a constant hot wire.

The second relay simply converts the polarity of the parking light signal to be a (-) to work with the constant hot.  If you switched the ground instead of the hot you could eliminate the second relay (the one one the right).

correct me if i'm wrong kevin, the setup above will work, but if the car is running and the parking lights aren't switched on, then won't the relay on the left buzz as it isn't energized properly, and don't you mean if he switches the hot instead of the ground, again correct me if i'm wrong,

The relay on the left will be completely energized, it shoudln't buzz at all - it will have 12vdc across the coil.

He requested the the ground be switched and that the lights be fed with a constant hot feed.

are you positive about that,(i use the poles in reverse as to the way you do, i dunno if it makes a difference, so it could be my ignorance) yes it will have 12 volts across the coil but only when the parking lights are on, but when it's off i mean, like during the day, and i meant about eliminating the second relay he would have to switch the hot instead of the ground, again correct me if i'm wrong.

thanks for the help so far guys i just gonna try to better state how i wish to try to get this to function.  I would like the angel eyes to blink with the parking lights when the alarm is armed or disarmed, but at the same time be able to turn them on or off while the car is sitting and not running or have key in it at all. so basically i would normally hook it up to a switch where it will turn on or off anytime via the switch, i just want to add the ability of flashing with the alarm without compromising the function of controling it with the switch any other time!

Thanks again guys

you dont even need relays. just use a couple of diodes to do what you want. below is the diagram.

ok then here's what you do, using the diagram underneath, the positive trigger is what you're connecting your parking lights too, then between the negative output wire from the relay and the ground input of the angel eyes insert a 3amp diode with the band facing towards the relay, then using the on/off switch, connect one side to a ground, and the other side taps on to the ground wire of the angel eyes with a diode in between, band facing the switch, if you don't understand, post back, i'll see if i can post a diagram.

That won't work with what he wants to do.  You can't go changing things just to make things easier and less complicated!   :)

If the ignition is on the first relay will stay energized connecting the coil of the second relay to pin 87 where no voltage or ground resides.  With the ignition on the first relay will always be energized and the second relay will never energize, since one side of the coil is connected to nothing.

Yes, you could eliminate the second relay by switching the positive, I believe I threw that in the original post that the second relay was only to change polarity of the parking light signal.

Thank you all for all the replies. Will the diagram t&t tech posted work? And yes t&t tech if you could make a diagram that would b great i understand things way better by seeing it more then by reading!!

hehe, yea i guess i didnt really break any ground wire with that setup.

It will "work" but not like you want it to.

With that setup whenever the parking lights are on the angel eyes will be on.  There is no "ignition isolation" like in the diagram I provided.  If the parking lights are off you will still be able to use the switch to force the angel eyes on, but like I said once the parking lights are on the angel eyes are on, too.

Do you have an aftermarket alarm or are you using the OEM keyless/security system?

ok eclipse the diagram i posted above, will allow the angel eyes to flash with the alarm, they won't turn on when you switch the parking lights on, and you can still toggle on and off using the switch. the bars coloured in purple are diodes the purple part would be the striped side of your diode, you can use 3 or 6 amp diodes.

we were being sarcastic when we said it would'nt work.

i know about sarcasm, but just tryin to help the dude out, the way he asked, i humbly apologize if i offended anyone in any manner, and kevin that original setup would have the relay buzzing. so in a sense it isn't really a plausibe install solution, it only works on paper. and eclipse dude the switching of the hot wire would really be alot easier for you, if you used the diagram ckeeler posted.

you didnt offend anybody t&t, dont sweat that, its just that this guy doesnt need to make something so complicated when all he needs is 2 little itty bitty  diodes and nothing more.  KIS, Keep It Simple. thats usually the best way to go.

ckeeler,

Your diagram will only work if he has an aftermarket alarm, which he didn't indicate.  On most newer cars the turn signals and parking lights are controlled by a BCM so there is no "parking flash from alarm" - it is  common feed regardless of what turns the light on (keyless entry or actually using the light during normal operation).

I'm still not understanding why you think the relay will "buzz" t&t - it won't.  If the ignition is on the relay will be completely, 100% isolated from the parking light signal so there will be nothing to make it buzz.

After looking at my original diagram I realized I should have put diodes across the relays to protect the ignition and BCM (assuming there is one and he is not using an aftermarket alarm.

yes, i am just making the assumtion he has an aftermarket system. but like you said, he never told us that.

there's no way that relay can buzz t&t. do a bench model of it and you'll see.

ok guys, i will, hope the original poster's problem has been solved, laters.

then you will have to use relays. you should use diodes as well.
