The capacitor allows the coil of the relay to be energized until the capacitor stores a charge, thus de-energizing the coil. The resistor bleeds off the charge of the capacitor when positive voltage is removed from the other side of the coil. You can increase the output time by simply changing the value of the capacitor. This one will give you about a 1/2 second output.

Do you have a single element lamp? How do you want it to work? Blinker takes priority over brake lights on that side?

I will draw you a diagram tomorrow. I am assuming that you have the flashers and just need help with the priority.

You will have to build one relay per side of vehicle. Notice that terminal 86 is connected to the front side of the flasher. This will energize the relay when the blinker is turned on. When this happens, terminals 30 and 87 are connected together. This will make the bulb blink as the flasher tells it to. When the relay is not energized, terminal 30 is connected to terminal 87A. This will let the brake light power get to the bulb.

This may be a dumb question, but is this how GM wired some of their cars/trucks? The late 80's/early 90's trucks and the Corvette come to mind.

Thanks.

So if you were at a stop sign turning right, with your right turn signal on, your right tail light will blink, and your left tail light will be solid?

Just making sure. I would like to wire my side marker lights this way.

Thanks.

The tail light is a separate bulb or element on the same bulb.  A tail light is not quite as bright as your brake light lamp.  If your tail lights are on and you apply the brake, the brake light lamp is brighter so you can easily notice that the brakes have been applied.

If you are at a stop light at night with your left blinker on, the tail light will be on.  The right brake light will be on.  And the left brake light will be blinking.  But the tail light will remain on steady.  The blinker will be very noticeable, because that lamp is more intense than the tail light lamp.

If you are having trouble getting to a hot non-flashed wire at your blinker switch, there is another way to do it.  It will require an extra relay per side of the car, and the side marker will flash opposite of the actual blinker.  Just throwing that out there in case it is very hard to find the blinker wire before the flasher.  The other guy had easy access to his flasher assembly.

I thought this thread was for a single bulb with one internal element. Having one bulb to act as the tail light and blinker.

Assuming you have a separate bulb for brake lights.

From what I have been reading, he has a separate tail/running light bulb/element.  He was wanting to integrate the blinkers with the brake light bulb/element.

Integrating a blinker into a tail/running light, will not be very effective when the brighter brake light element is burning.  You won't really be able to see the blinker unless you are looking for it.

The diagram above WILL work just fine for your side marker lights.  Where it says to brake light wire, it should read to side marker light wire.
