hey,
i've got a 2002 toyota hilux that i have a few questions about how the headlight relay and wiring works
(i'm from australia if that helps)

i've tried figuring out how the factory wiring works in the car so i can wire up the high beams with the low beams when i turn the high beams on (i want more light and yes i've been told i'm wasting my time)

i have dual filament h4 bulbs (high and low in the same bulb)

i've been told the best way to do it is connect 2 separate relays from the factory relay and have one for low and one for high, and then having the high beam relay triggering the low beam relay - turning on both at once

im finding it hard to understand how to connect the relays so they will coexist with the factory wiring

when i turn on the headlight switch to standard low beams, i get a constant to one of the headlights, and a lowbeam wire lighting up the lowbeam filament. i switch to high beam, and the constant is still on, but the lowbeam cable and filament turns off and the highbeam filament and cable turns on (obviously working normally)

i dont get how that works. i'm an electrician by trade and obviously cars are a lot different than houses, but just trying to get my head around it.

ive tried splitting the lowbeam factory cable, attaching one end to 85, and the other to 86, (the coil of the relay). and then splitting the constant at the headlight to 30 and 87 n/o.

thats as far as i got, i turned on the relay and i heard a buzzing sound but nonetheless the headlights were working fine. i turned the headlights off quick for worry of damaging the cars wiring.
(my theory is its the headlight safety warning tone somehow going through the relay)

have i done this correctly? i had only practised with one headlight as a trial so any help would be much appreciated

Not advisable to have two filaments in the same bulb lighting at the same time, but if you wanna do it, it's at your risk, in the toyota hilux on my side of the pond,  the stalk switches the ground to high and low beams, so here we go,

at the stalk locate the wire that triggers the low beam and cut this in half, using a single pole double throw relay, wire like this

87@- to the side of the cut trigger wire from the stalk

30- to the other side of the cut wire

87- ground

85- trigger wire for the high beam (-)

86- 12 volt constant or ignition.

 one relay, less cluster, less problems in the long run.

thanks for the help

yeah i was wondering about if that was very safe to do aswell (both filaments at the same time)
but i figured i dont have my high beams on for more than 30 seconds or so so i cant see it damaging too much - but i understand the risk.

by the stalk - do you mean at the switch on my steering wheelas in that turns on the lights there?

also i was trying to upgrade the existing factory wiring to the headlights - so that the factory wiring turns on the trigger to activate 1 relay for lows and another relay for highs (which also turn on the lows) but for the feed to the light itself to be powered from the battery by thicker guage wiring - to reduce voltage drop and give me the best voltage at the lights as possible.

Doing it at the stalk would yield the same results.
