If you have an air bag does the air bag light flash? Do you have cruise control that isn't working also? If your answer is yes then you are going to need the clock spring for the air bag and that is right under the steering wheel. They are about $80-90 from a Ford dealership. These are very common to go bad.
dont have cruise and the air bag light works ok and is the spring easy to replace
dont have cruise and the air bag light works ok and is the spring easy to replace and will this only fix the horn and not the dome light ps thank you
The clock spring is a round piece of plastic under the steering wheel and has a wire ribbon (looks like a computer cable) wound inside like a spring and after years of turning the steering wheel the ribbon will break. Your air bag, horn, and cruise (if applicable) run through these wires and when they break you will lose connection causing the horn not to work and the air bag light will flash in the dash. I guess that only 1 or 2 wires can break and still work but it will only be a matter of time before the rest break if this is your problem. You can pull 4 10mm nuts off the back side of the steering wheel and remove the air bag and you will see your horn wires, etc. But in order to remove the clock spring you will have to remove the steering wheel and the steering column cover's and the cover on the dash under the steering column to unhook the wires. You might even look under the dash and make sure that one of the connectors isn't unhooked. There should be atleast 2 connectors side by side, one is a yellow/orange and that is the airbag connector and right next to it should be for the horn, cruise, etc.
As far as your dome light goes, if you replaced the switch and the wire is good then you have a ground issue. I would pull the switch back out and check everything again. If I remember correctly, the switch gets grounded when you screw it in there.
