what color lights are legal?

We all have hazard lights, where both the yellow turn signals flash together. If unfortunately someone gets stuck on the highway where it is quite dangerous to pull to the side (to change a tire or something) I want to ADD some different colors and alternate flashing lights. I don't think/know if having red and blue alternate flashing is legal since the police troopers have them. Anyone knows what flashing sequence and colors are legal and illegal or a site with that info? Also are flashbulbs instead of bulbs ok or not ok? Thanks.

White and Amber i beleive would be the only legal options.

its nothing you can really do with bulbs. thats a quick faulty equipment ticket.

red and blue are illegal for any use where the flash is directly visible and on any vehicle which is not considered "emergency" or "enforcement"--in other words put red or blue on a non-firetruck/ambulance/cop cruiser and you get an instant ticket as well as your ride impounded!

and if it's blue flashing lights odds are they'll also ticket you for impersonation of an officer

stick to white and yellow--and be careful how you mount those lights

Thanks for all the info, its helpful to know. Also I don't want to mount the lights permanently on the outside of the vehicle. Just if I have an emergency highway breakdown I would like to put up the visible lights on my car's roof so that passing cars wont hit me by any chance. I've heard of cases where someone tries to change a tire and got killed doing so by oncoming vehicles hitting them by mistake.

Is is ok if I put amber colored lights:

a) that flash alternately

b) have "flash"bulbs (not lightbulbs)

c) are temporarily mounted on the roof of the car, for maximum visibility by all highway users.

or go to a sporting shop and get a emergency strobe light. runs on D cell and can be seen a few miles away.

Thanks. I think I'll go to a sporting shop for the mergency strobe light.

Flares might also be a good idea. Maybe I'll keep both for double safety. Thanks for the great ideas and help. And thanks to this site as well.

Also, you can always check your State's motor vehicle laws. They all address automotive lighting, including auxillary and emergency, in great detail. You might be surprised at what IS illegal versus what you see on the street!

I wish they had one set of laws for all states. That way you are either on this side or that side and not have to doubt "is it legal in my state?". I wonder why they have different laws in different states. Hey, if I become president someday, I will change the traffic laws so that we have the same set of laws in the whole country! if possible the whole world. What is wrong in one state or country should really be wrong everywhere. right? well I am not the pres and perhaps I better keep my mouth shut.
