I put in a fm changer today in a 03 cavalier and when I was done the backlight on the odemeter never light up, I can still see the meter and it still counts but no lights. I only tapped into the ignition and the power wires in the sterring column (fused of course) the red and pink wires. I grounded  the unit to the kick panel so I dont know what they hell is up. Is there a light bulb in this thing that could have coincidentally burnt out. I also check and made sure that everthing was plugged in like the dimmer switch and such. The dash lights work fine but this damn odometer wont light up.

Did you change the radio? I have seen the same thing happen if wrong radio is used. There is a bulb for the odometer backlighting. You may want to disconnect everything you did first to make sure you didn't make a mistake or pinch a wire someplace.

The deck wasnt changed out, infact I never even disconnected the harness, as far as unhooking everything, thats the first thing I did, I also took off every panel I had removed during the install and turned the car on to see if it would help but It didnt. I have a feeling this is gonna be a case of coincidence but I just hate thinking that I am going to send this guy back to his dealer to get warrenty work done and then find out that it was something stupid I did.

Sometimes, I've noticed on my 2000 cavalier that if the dome light dimmer switch isn't pluggen in (ie. when the dash is taken apart), the odometer light may not come on. Give it a try.

Good Luck!

Oh yeah, I did have to replace the guage cluster in my car once due to the same problem... the light just burns out. The bulbs are non replacable too, so you have to replace the entire cluster as far as I know.

If you feel up to it, you could remove the cluster and measure the bulb contacts for power and ground with it still plugged in to give you peace of mind. Coincidence doesn't happen as often as most installers would like, but it does happen.

I cant rememeber ever having a case of coincidence before, but this last week I already had one when a guys brake lights and back up lights didnt work after I installed a command start and that turned out to be a faulty harness under the bumper in the back for trailer lights, and for this to be another case would seem strange but I checked everything you guys mentioned already so I dunno whats left.

Had the same thing after installing a deck.  Took everything apart, but not disconnected, the light came back on while I went to answer the phone.  The closes thing that I found, the light started working after I pulled the drivers kick panel.  Why, I have no idea.  Could the cluster/harness be to tight, and wire disconnet.  I hope someone has an answer.

I guess It could be the drivers kick panel, I did pull that off to ground the system and never pulled it back off after wards when I was trouble shooting but that seems kinda strange to me.

I've seen it happen, installed a starter, vehicle came in with odo not lit. 01 cavalier, there's no official TSB on it, but the tech at GM I spoke too says he's seen a few of them.
