I wired a fan controller, meant for a computer, to a couple fans I had on the amp rack. on the computer molex plug, you have yellow, black, black, red. I hooked the yellow to 12 volts, the first black to ground, and tested it. The fans powered up fine.   But the control was supposed to light up on the knobs. I know because it ran nice in my computer when I tested it. So, I decided to hook the red wire to 12 volts also..   BAD IDEA. Smoke went everywhere. The LED lights came on and were blinking. I pulled the fuse after a second or two. And then realized that the red wire must only get 5 volts instead of 12. Assuming that this still works, is there an easy way to get 5 volts to that wire, or should I just live without the controller lighting up>?

This is what I used:

What you need to do is put a 4.3V Zener Diode in line with the 5V wire. :)
