Hey everybody,
I am wanting to illuminate my 12" subs. I was looking at some 5mm red LED's. The spec sheet says that they are 30 degree lights. I was wondering how many of these I would need to illuminate my subs. I don't want it to be too overwhelming but bright enough that you can see the subs in the dark. Thanks in advance for your advice.

It depends on how you are angling them and how far away they are. If you shoot them from across the trunk onto the sub, then two or three per sub will be good.
If you put them close to the sub, then you will need to direct them across the top and not directly at the sub, or it will just show a dot of color on the sub, and the closer you are, the more you will need to cover the full angle.
So depending on where your subs are, try and place them on the opposite side of the trunk, and try not to point them directly at the subs, but rather skim across the subs, and then they will light it better without making spots.
I would use three LEDs aimed across the trunk for each sub, this should light them well, but not be too overwhelming. I am also assuming these are the 5000mcd LEDs.

The spec sheet says they are min 1700 max 2200 mcd (whatever that means, I'm guessing brightness). I was wanting to mount the LED's right beside the subs. They are flush mounted so I was hoping to mount them inside the MDF ring, but not sure if that would work. Also, how many of these lights do you think it would take to light us a plexi panel that is about 10" x 10". I would like this panel to be BRIGHT. Thanks chris.

If you put them in the MDF rings, then you would want probably about 4 per sub, aiming across the face of the sub. I would mount them so that instead of directing strait across the face, they are at an angle, and overlap each other. For the plexi, if you want it bright, put about three LEDs on each side of the panel, all four sides. Depending on what you want to do with the panel will change the placement. If you put a picture in the middle and want to light the edges, then you would want some on each side. If the panel is just to see through, then you might not need that many or even one on each side, two sides might work. Let me draw a picture of what I'm thinking, excuse the fine artwork:
