I have just purchased an 85 Ford Ranger, Dash lights had blown fuse at that time, no radio. fuse kept blowing, noticed one of the bulbs was out and changed that, fuse blows as soon as lights are engaged. Put in a stereo also, it works fine and all of my other lights and gauges work fine, only problem is the fuse for the dash lights themself.

short to ground after the switch is your problem. you will need to track the wire from the switch to the dash lights and find where it has a bare spot or bad connector. start there first.
