I used a calculator to find the correct resistor size for the led,but here lies the problem. My local radio shack and electronic stores do not carry a 360 or 470 ohm resistor, and the next highest they sell is a 1k ohm resistor. Should i go with a 1k ohm resistor or will the light be dim? Would this cause the led to die faster than normal? would this even work? Thanks for the input.

You could hook up a series of lower resistors totaling 360 or 470.  Another way is to get a low and high resistor in parallel totalling 360-470 (ie. 100 ohm and 620ohm) if not you can order from lsdiodes (www.lsdiodes.com)
