Hi!,

I am going to install an overhead console with switch controlled lights. I am just wondering how would I wire it to work with my pin switches on my door. Would I use a dual filament bulb?

You will not need a dual filament bulb, but rather a relay. If your door triggers are negative, you can wire the door trigger wire and your switch wire to the 85 pin on the relay. The other side of the switch will need to be grounded. Pin 86 and 87 need a fused constant line. 30 will go to the positive side of your lights. That way when either the switch is turned on or the door is opened, it will operate the relay. They have good diagrams of relay wiring under the basics section to the left side of this page if you need more help.

You can use a single filament bulb, a relay, 2 diodes, and a switch.

With the setup I am thinking of, you can have the doors pin switch activate the bulb, along with the ability to over ride the door pin switch. You could have the light come on and off with the door, or have it on/off whenever you wanted via the switch.

Connecting pin 85 to the door pin circuit and pin 86 to the polarity opposite of the door pin circuit. Connect pin 87 to a 12V source. Next, connect the anode side of a diode to pin 30, and the cathode side to the light. This part will allow the light to turn on and off with the door pin switch. NOTE: It would be advised that you run an inline fuse between the 12V source and the relay, but obviously not "REQUIRED" to work.

Now for the override section. Connect 12V (again fuses suggested but not required) to one pin on the switch. Connect the other pin of the switch to the anode side of the second diode, and the cathode side to the light circuit. This will allow the light to be turned on when the door is not opened (ie. as a map light while driving).

NOTE: This is not setup to turn the light off when the door is opened. However could be done as well with the addition of another switch.

Feel free to PM me if you don't follow, I can e-mail a schematic.

Thanks for the replies however, the console has two switches for driver and passenger dome lights. How would I wire that (I guess I should have been more specific in my initial post). I would want to both lights to illuminate once either door is opened, however, the individual lights illuminate when their switch is activated on the console.
