I'm helping a friend import a 97 US Outback into Canada. In order to pass the inspection, the car must have Daytime Running Lights added (most cars in Canada after 89 require DRL).

I bought a $25 DRL kit from Canadian Tire, the Hamsar 45040. With a "normal" car, the 45040 detects spark from a spark plug wire when the engine is running then I guess applies a +12V to it's output wire which in turn connects to the low beam terminals of the headlights, regardless of the headlight switch setting.

Subaru uses a relay for each headlight, and the switch appears to switch the negative, not positive. Should I use the DRL module and a polarity reversing relay to apply negative upstream from the relays (i.e. at the switch wire)? Or should I try and hookup the output of the DRL module downstream from the relays to the headlight wires? My concern is if I go downstream from the relays how do I get both headlights to work?

Sorry, I don't have access to 97 Legacy Outback wiring diagram so I'm trying to make sense of it all. Perhaps someone here as tackled this before and has a good solution.

BTW, the color codes on the headlight jack terminals (driver side) are:
horizontal connector = Yellow/Blue
vertical connecter1 = Red
vertical connector2 = RED / Blue

Check the relay box under the bonnett ,you can tap in there,if this is the same setup like the jdm models.Left and right are there but you need relays.
