I have an 07 Corolla S and installed interior neon lights by the pedals. The power comes from the 12v cigarette lighter to a switch and both neons connected to the switch, grounded properly. First time i didn't ground it and the fuse for radio, clock...blew up. I was told later on to put a fuse to the switch or the lighter to prevent wires catching fire.
How would I wire a fuse to either the switch or the lighter, or is it necessary to do this because the lights turn on perfectly?

I have done a lot of custom 12v lighting installs on my own truck, namely LEDs and neon systems. While you CAN go without fused power source it is wise to listen to the tech's advice. I would recommend a designated power supply that you can run your neons from, not just off of the lighter. There is probably only a ten or fifteen amp fuse and these pop easliy. Increasing the size of the fuse won't work either. You will eventually burn up the fuse box. REPLACING IS NOT PLEASANT!
Here is what you should do. Take a wire approx. 14 gauge from the battery up to the Accesory power wire. Make sure this item is fused, for the reason that if the wire is not crimped properly it could ground from batt. cause fire, OR wire can rub on fire wall and contact ground melting wire. I have melted a wire this way before-lots of smoke! NO breaks in the wire between batt and accessory except the fuse. The other wire for the accessory is ground. This is the wire to which you should hook your switch, NOT the power. If you want to add on more neons, strobe, LEDs later, I would suggest checking radio supply place for a distribution block. They are cheap, supply 2-4 fused terminals for your accessories, and they usually only require ONE positive battery cable hook in! Check it out. Good luck.
