I'm currently running some Boston Rally comps up front, 60w rms in stock locations and want to add 8" midbass speakers to the front setup. The 5 1/4 rallys just aren't cutting it bass wise. Being somewhat new to car audio I'm not sure If i would need to buy separete crossovers for the 8"s or if I could just use the crossover onboard my amp which is a 4ch Phoenix Gold Tantrum. The 2 front chs are powering the comps and the 2 rear ch are power a pair of coaxils. I also have a separate 2ch amp 700w rms powering a single 12" sub in the hatch. Also how would I go about powering the speakers. Could I use the the 2 rear chs and lose the coaxils? What is a good midbass speaker? Have my eyes on DEI Studio 3084s..any good? Please help me out, I'm lost!!!!!

hey whats up Ive done pretty much what you are about to do with your midbass stuff--heres the best way, ditch the passive crossover box and get an indash 3 way crossover--not an EQ!! Thats right, they make those-- the one i have used with great success is the lanzar SX7. I know its an off brand piece, but its the only one of its kind still in existence, It allows the user to decide where to cross over the tweeters mids and subs and allows individual amplitude control for each of the three outputs-- so, you would connect your tweets to the high out, your mids to the mid out and your subs to the sub out and then you can decide how much of each frequency goes to which speakers--its a really clean setup. I had 4 fosgate FNX 6" mids in the front doors and 4 fosgate tweets ( not that you need that many ) and 4 Excelon DB+ 12" subs in my toyota truck and it was the best system i ever heard. You do need 6 channels of amplification ( or 4 with sub channel ) and you can put in any components you want. Tim

Couldn't I just Get a 3 way xover...somethin like a 3xs or 4xs from Audio Control...run the midbass of the 2 rear chs bridged from the 4ch amp? That would give me somethin like 100w rms, and run the signal from the bass(if i get the 4xs),midbass,midrange and tweets from the 3xs/4xs? Would I still need to use the passive xovers which came w/the comps?Also, just came upon the Audio Control HPX...this things looks awesome...comes with a 2 way xover plus will also help my sound stage. Will this work for what I'm trying to achieve?? Will I also need another xover if I get the HPX since it's only a 2way xover??? Sorry if this is to lengthy. But I really need some help here guys!!!

****Update: forgot to mention 1 important thing...I'm currently using a passive eq which currently has an onboard xover for the sub signal, so I shoudn't need a 4 way xover??

Another idea!
Bridge the Tantrum to 2 channel. Us those 2-channels to power the fronts (everything...) Passive cross the front speakers. Approx 200-300 should do. If drivers are close together use 6-12dB networks. If drivers are apart (>12") use 12-18bB networks.
Clean level differences up with your passive EQ.
This doubles your available power to all front drivers, and eliminates the need for more channels and equipment besides passives. Less active equip means less signal noise. Less amp channels means less efficiency loss and total current demand on charging system. Keep it simple..
Downside, passives are not as concise as actives. Calculate values and then experiment to get best results. It's worth the extra work!! Read some... Lotsa info on the internet. Actives make moving crossover points and matching levels easy and more predictable, but at a much higher cost and complexity.
So many ways to get the same thing done. Good luck!!!

Ok, so what your saying is ditch the rear speakers, bridge the amp to 2ch, and from those 2ch power my front stage? That would be ideal if it where just my set of comps...but then how would I power the 8" midbass drivers which I plan on adding to my front stage in the near future? I'm not sure what the 6-12db and 12-18 db networks are and how I set them...could you give some more insight on this please??? My system currently has 2 sets of xovers...on the amp and the passives which came w/the comps. Could I use these effectively or should I buy an active? The xover point currently on the comps is aprrox 300, set at the amp. I'm working towards SQ.
