i have been looking for a good amp for some tweeter nothing real special but more than my cd player pushes. i had a 500 hundred watt sony explode 4 channel amp and made the mistake of hooking my tweeters up to it. sounded excelent for about a week til one of them blew up sounded like a shotgun going off i almost wreaked. But my main question is a friend of mine has a rockford fosgate punch 40i a old school amp i know it wont handle subs but will it make my tweeters scream without the shotgun sound effect???? i really need to know if the 40i will work for tweeters or do i need to find a different amp. thanx a bunch

I have 250watts rms going to each of my Focal TLR tweeters and they have a 15watt rms handling rating. Been that way for four years and they are still sounding great.

You might want to check your crossover points/slopes, your volume knob, and your ears!

I agree... I use an Alpine PDX4.150 (two of the channels) to run the JL tweeters (rated 25 watts) in my car. The other two channels run my mids (rated 25 watts, also). That's 600 watts (704 watts according to the birth certificate) to run 100 watts worth of speakers! Never have I had any issues with them... I ran Nakamichi 160W monoblocks to my Infinity eMIT Kappa ribbons, rated 10 watts... No issues there, either.

You've got something set up wrong. Not that the Sony amp is any great shakes, I am not saying that maybe you shouldn't have a better amp for your tweeters, I'm just saying that you DO have something setup wrong. Even with a newer, or better amp, you're still not going to necessesarily be safe if incorrectly installed or adjusted.

BTW, the bang that you heard was MOST LIKELY your crossover cap (if installed) popping - I've never heard ANY speaker fail like that - it just doesn't happen.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
