I had a 1997 Freightliner (sp) come in to get a new radio and two amps. Customer says the am that was already in there was not working, looks like factory Alpine for the speakers but dont know because he did not have the faceplate for his radio. We are installing a Pioneer 5900 head unit, Eclipse XA 4100 four channel, and a Kicker ZX 200.2 for the midbass.

Got everything installed and the four channel keeps turning off, usually after turning the volume up. Metered everything, speakers, power, remote, and ground. Everything was good, so we swapped the amp for another Eclipse XA 4100. Same problem. The amp thurns off, the back lit Eclipse goes dark as if it is turnes off, but power still gets 13+ volts, and remote still getrs the same, ground is fine when checked with continuity. The amp is not blowing fuses or overheating, just cutting off. The Kicker amp remains on, which is connected to the same power and remote, just different grounds as they are installed away from eachother.

Thought it may be bad RCA outputs on the rear of the radio, so we swapped that, same thing. The customer had to leave and will be back in a couple weeks, I am going to swap four channels to a different brand to see if that changes anything,

Never seen anything like this, any guidance or suggestions would be great, Thank you in advance.

Mike

I would strongly suspect a shorted or grounded speaker. Disconnect all speakers. Turn up and connect one speaker at a time to find problem speaker. If RCAs are not the problem and remote and power are common to both amps then grounds and speakers are the only independent variables left. Also be aware that I have seen Freightliners with common ground speaker arrangements (in the sleeper). This will definitely cause problems with an XA4100.

I believe we tested for that but I will double check once it comes back. Do you think that would cause the amp to turn off relatively quickly like it does? At low volumes it plays for a while just fine too.

Oh yeah, its a Peterbuilt, not Freightliner. Possibly still a common ground in a Peterbuilt?
