My volume on my headunit max's out at 40. When I listen to a music cd, I have the volume at 30. Now I dont use any of the headunit's speaker wire's for my speakers. Instead, all my speakers, tweeter, and woofers, get their "sound" from the 3 pair of pre amp outputs. In other words, my 3 amps power my speakers. Anyways, I also have xm radio which I have a direct connect to my antenna input on my headunit. In order for me to have the sound output using my xm radio, I have to max out the volume on my headunit. Is there any possibility that I could ruin my headunit eventhough I use only the RCA's? The headunit is a panasonic HR1003U (touchscreen)
Nah your headunit should be fine. You could possibly fry your rca preouts but i doubt that. I am a little confused tho you say you have three amps powering your speakers. What kind and size amps are they? You should have no problem listening to your music without turning radio all the way up. Maybe you should double check the install and make sure everything is hooked up proper. You could also try boost the gain on the amps a lil so that you dont have to turn your radio up so high.

The reason I need to turn the volume up higher for when I have the xm radio on is because that is going through my FM radio. FM radios dont have the same volume output as the cd player part can put out. And I have my voume at a 30 because thats where its pretty loud. Anyone else that sits in my car has the volume at a 20.
Do you have to do the same when you are just listening to the regular radio?

hmmm I honestly dont know. I dont listen to the regular radio. And I cant listen to it anymore because I disconnected the antenna. But when I have my headunit set to auxiliary for when I watch TV, the volume is the same as it is with my xm.
