Hi,
I have bought all my speakers, deck, sub, box, and sub amp and would like to test all of it together before I install it in my truck. Is it as simple as hooking the 12v live wire from the deck straight to a 12v supply (I have a variable 12,9,3 volt supply i made)? Does the accessory wire need to be hooked up or can i just leave it?
Also, I realize that the sub amp will be drawing a lot of current, am I able to just hook it up to another 12v supply or would it be better to use an actual car battery?
It's gonna be set up like this for a while, acting as a temporary stereo for my room until i get my new car. So the only thing i would we worried about is the sub amp draining the battery, which is why I wanna hook it up to a constant supply.

The accessory wire must be hooked up for the stereo to turn on. If you don't want it on all the time, wire in a switch to turn it on/off. If you want to wire the whole system up, your power supply must be able to supply enough current. Unless you have a very big and expensive supply, you can't run your amp off it. Most small power supplies can barely power a radio. Having a battery in your room is unsafe. Batteries give off gases like sulphuric acid. Be patient and listen to a regular home stereo till you have the car. You can harm speakers by playing them loud if they aren't in an enclosure.

A 12 volt adapter will do nothing...You need a stout power supply and battery if you are going to power all of that equipment.

Yeah, i want to if I can.
My stereo i had in my room just blew and it was old anyways.
Would a car battery charger rated for 12 amps do the job of powering the sub amp?
I have a suitable supply for the radio, and all my speakers and sub have an enclosure.

Ok then, how about hooking up my amp and sub to my computer, powering my amp with a 12v car battery charger?

Car battery chargers aren't designed to deliver their full rated output all the time. Music is dynamic and so are the power requirements of an amp. Unless you only plan to play the system at a very low volume, you will probably damage the charger.

hmmmm.... would I be abel to use say a power supply from a computer at all? or could I hook up my sub to my hoem stereo amp at all? the amp speakler output is at 8 ohms, and my sub can be either at 2 or 4. would it damage the amp and sub if i run the 4 ohm sub to an 8 ohm amp?

A single sub that can be either 2 ohms or 4 ohms? Describe how you would accomplish that. Your parents' home amplifier will either shut down into protection mode or be destroyed. Try to get these ideas out of your head young man and hold your system in a safe place while you work to get a car. ------------- Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

I agree with stevdart. I wouldnt risk ruining your system or your parents. Your system is disigned to be in a vehicle, not a house. And their house system is disigned to power home audio, not car audio. Simply keep your system in a good place till you get a car. If you ruin something, not only will you need to save for a car, but you will need to save for a replacement amp or whatever.

Computer power supply is too small...unless its rated to put out 40 amps
