I have an alpine CDE9852, really not that old.. maybe about a year..

Anyway im installing into a 97 Honda civic with keyless entry, Whenever i turn the radio passed 15 or so, the radio powers off...

The car has a premium audio system, like it has tweeters and everything, does that mean it has an amp?

You need to check the voltage on the yellow wire of the radio with the volume on 14.  Let us know what you find.

Is it possible that their is a protect on the speakers or amp that shuts off its sound supply (the headunit) to prtect them, I am an idiot?

Good point audioman.  Try balancing radio to left and see if it still cuts out.  If so balance it to the right, check it again.  If it only cuts out on one channel or the other then yes you may have a speaker problem.  Some of the alpine units do need a direct to battery supply for the amplifier section.  I really think he is starving it for power.

Make sure that the radio has a good ground to the vehicle chassis too. Don't use a wire in the harness for ground. Use a digital meter across the battery and ground of the radio wires. If there is a problem with the power/ground supply the meter will indicate that when the problem occurs.
