I am currently in the process of creating a car for competition purposes. I am planning on buying 3 or 4 Alpine 10" Type X series subwoofers...however...I need some help on choosing and amplifier and powering options. I need the advice of the big dawgs..please. Main concerns are what amplifiers? and how to upgrade powering system? They do not make upgraded alternators so other than a new battery and bat-cap I dont know what else to do. Please post back. Thank you for all the help. BTW the subs are dual 4-ohm and 1000w rms a piece. Thanks

What vehicle? make, model, year?
What power class are you shooting for?
What are you looking to $$$?

I would look harder for an upgraded alternator, try powermaster, High Output alts, or irragi alts, I would bet one of those companies would make one for you.

What organization and classes are you looking at running?

What made you chose alpine type x subs?     The few I have seen at a pure SPL show have had very bad results.   They just dont have the proper excursion abalities for SPL use.

Yeah, Jeff is right, those Type-X's can be made to sound good and hit deep, BUT, when there pushed in spl purposes, they almost always bust apart. It's like bringing an Austin martin to a drag race, you'll get smoked (SPL), but if you throw in some curves, you'll win (SQ)
Can you return them?

I have a 2005 Toyota Matrix XR...so the size is somewhat of an issue but with a hatchback the system should sound pretty good. What other suggestions for subs would you offer then? Like I said I need a sub that sounds good in a smaller enclosure but still packs of hell of a punch..hit me back. Thanks

Make sure you check out Irragi as Dom is the only person that I contacted that was very familiar with the alternator on a newer toyota. They are set up differently then a normal alternator for some reason and he is the only one I found that could make a replacement that was a direct bolt on,

New idea...2 Jl audio 12w7s or 10w7s with JL 1000/1 running each. Little more pricy..but itll do the job. Also where is the best deals for jls does anybody know?

Don't know how "new" that idea is... maybe new for you?  In any case, try your local authorized JL Audio dealer.

I don't think either of those subs are the best choice for you if you are looking for all out SPL.

Do you want it to be a daily ride that can play music and go into comps or do you want flat out SPL? We could make some recommendations possibly off that.

And do you know how many cubic feet you have to play with for a box?

Lo,yea force.  i thought you were trying to keep a small enclosure.  w7s require a alarge amout of space. should try like 4 12w3s with a 1000/1 powering them.  enclosure would be half the  space as 2 w7s and could possibly make quite a bit more spl.  at least in the means i believe you are looking for. (daily driver with a lot of spl)

What would be the downside of having 12" JL W7 other than the space thing... and the weight. Those things killed my gas milage like none other.

But dang did those things ever rock. Did a number on my stock charging system though. Thats why I ripped out the 1000-1's and the subs.

But yeah, just wondering what you guys thought about them.

w7s are not a big spl speaker.  they are designed for more sq.  they will push out some spl but you can find better for the purpose you are wanting.   put  4 w3 12s  in with only one 1000/1 and you will be in heaven ..  a lot of spl and still great sq.  but a lot less on the wallet, and your charging system.
