my suburban has the small square tuner and the seperate tape deck mounted in the center of the dash does anyone know if there is any aftermarket mounting kit or any way to mount a regular cd player...

  metra makes a kit,american international makes a kit , scocshe makes a kit,   pretty common kit most shops will have them in stock.

they're out there.... and most of the time you can get them in the factory dash color.... I know metra carries different colors.... they even make a pocket to replace the radio....

As stated above, just about everybody makes a kit for this vehicle. It takes the place of the cassette deck, the CD player will mount in the middle of the dash. There is also a kit that allows you to remove the Radio Control piece.
When you purchase the kit it would really be worth it to get the 15 dollar harness also. And a 6 dollar antenna adapter.
Your radio has 3 separate parts, the 2 that you see, and a tuner/amplifier that both of those pieces plug into. The wires that mate up with the harness are on top of the tuner/amp module. You can remove this piece, or just simply unplug the wires from the top of it. 2 Nuts to remove it,(if I remember correctly) one at firewall and one at the other end of the metal bracket that the tuner is mounted to.
