My friend has a JBL 1201.1 mono amp and it has three 40 amp fuses on the amplifier. One was missing when he set the gains and he has now found it.

What exactly does a missing fuse do to an amplifier? Is there a loss of protection or a loss of output? or possibly both?

He was wondering if he needs to change his gains or if it is the same after putting the third fuse back in.

Since it's evident by your post that he tested the amp with tones or music to set the gain, the amplifier is working without the third fuse. All three fuses, then, do not have to be installed for the amp to operate. The fuses combine to provide protection against an over-current condition. A missing fuse means that the current that the amplifier can withstand is lower than it could safely be.

He will not have to re-adjust the gains. The fuse rating doesn't affect signal input. (But between you and me, I would give it another go anyway! Maybe just a little superstitious about things. ;)
