Subject: going to double din, 02 tahoe
Date Posted: May 19, 2008 at 1:03 PM

A buddy of mine has a 2002 Chevy Tahoe with a factory unit in it (1.5 din), he wants to go with a double din unit and I've seen some Tahoe's with double din units installed.  Is it pretty easy to accomplish or is there a lot involved in making it happen?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!

Mike

According to Crutchfield, nothing double-DIN will even fit. Now, depending on how good you are with fabrication, you might be able to make it go in, but nothing double-DIN will drop in.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Yeah...and Crutchfield told me back in '02 that I couldn't put a double din unit in my '02 Sonata either.

I've seen a picture of a double din unit in a 2002-ish Tahoe and it didn't look like a whole of fabrication went in to it at all.

Here's a pic of a 2002 Escalade with a double din unit...

and here's a 96 Yukon with one...

Change your center cage in the dash to one from a 2003+ truck, pick up new dash trim for same as well...... the easiest option.

Or, start fabricating.....

Little bit of mucking about, but yes, it does fit.

Yeah it will snap in but you have to lower your heater and ac controls and then make a custom mount for the radio. The shop I work at just recently did one.

I never said it WOULDN'T, did I? posted_image ANYTHING can go anywhere, IF YOU ARE GOOD WITH FABRICATION. (and I believe I stipulated that, with the phrase "nothing will drop in"...) I was also told there was no way to put a double-DIN in my Civic, but there's a W205 in there right now!

Now, back to your issue, if you are good with fabbing, you SHOULD be able to get a double-DIN in there. Nothing will "drop-in".

Well...considering no double din was listed to fit, I understood that it wouldn't be a drop-in situation.  I was just gauging as to how difficult a process it may be.

I definitely appreciate all the feedback gentlemen!!!
